"Special Family Event - Memories for a life time. "
My mother turned 80 and we wanted to celebrate in style. At the same time, my cousin was playing in the Women's Lacrosse World Cup in Edinburgh, so we all set off to cheer her on. I wanted someplace really special for my mom, since it was her 80th, and I was also traveling with my 10 year old son, so we had a wide range of ages to satisfy. The Balmoral was excellent in every single aspect. The location is perfect. We could all go out and sight see, and if my mother or son got tired, we could quickly return for a quick "pick- me up" or rest, while the rest of us carried on. The restaurants and bars catered to the guests, and were small an intimate. We seemed to end up in one each day and we were all extremely happy with the food. The pool was perfect for my 10 year old son, as well as my mom, who would spend each night there. The hotel is peaceful and elegant without being stuffy. The bathrooms were world class. I wanted a "special" place and the Balmoral fulfilled it 100% I would return in a heartbeat. I am already thinking of when I can return next year.

"Great Location, High Price"
This place has a great location, deep within the warrens of Old Town Edinburgh. The atmosphere of the place is great with the many alleys, or closes of the town. The rooms are surprisingly modern and well-appointed. They are also spacious. The price may give one pause, however, as it is likely to be over $250 per night. Also the sofa beds are not the best in comfort, as the bed-pad is thin and beneath it is only metal springs. But the views are great, the service is very good and the rooms are spacious and enjoyable.

"mixed bag"
Good location, friendly staff, food service ok. Terrible wifi connection system when it worked. Housekeeping inconsistent. Some towels missing one day, late in the day servicing another, evening turn down service showed up one day and not the others and toilette tank took ages in refilling after flushing. Hotel needs general tightening up on service consistency

"Convenient, comfortable city centre hotel"
We stayed here for a long Bank Holiday weekend during the last week of the Edinburgh Festival. The city was very busy and our decision was last minute; we were lucky to get a club room on the top floor at all, and pleased to be able to move to one with a view of the castle for our second and third nights. The hotel staff were professional and responsive, friendly without being intrusive, and swiftly able to sort out our requests. The room was very comfortable and decorated and equipped to a high standard; I am slowly coming to terms with the translucent-glazed sliding-door bathroom concept (I accept that this is probably my problem. not theirs...). We ate out in the city every night so as far as the restaurant goes I can only comment on breakfast, which was a substantial and well-stocked buffet, with additional items willingly prepared to order. I would happily forego the breakfast haggis, though. Overall, an excellent stay.

Good location, just a few mins walk from Waverley but quiet. Hotel clean and modern, snug bar and rooftop garden are nice, great views down to Leith. Staff were polite and helpful.

"Nice for a family"
The location was great, and it is nice to have space and a kitchen when traveling with kids and or family. But, I would have liked a little better housekeeping. Example, my daughter spilled hot chocolate on the bed, not a lot, but very very visible on the comforter cover and sheets, and when we arrived back, the bed had been made with the same stuff, clearly visible as you looked at the bed. There wasn't a top sheet on the bed, so you were sleeping skin to comforter, and I don't know about anyone else, but not knowing if they change those or how often is a really nasty thought. Since, they didn't even change one that was clearly dirty. Never enough towels. Seemed very bare minimum as far as housekeeping goes. I would probably not stay there again, but I would recommend based on need for a family. Side note, it is surrounded by strip joints.

"Great Hotel"
We had a great stay. The staff we very friendly and helpful, the room was lovely, the food was good, and it was very peaceful. It's a £10 cab ride to get anywhere though, so keep that in mind if that kind of thing bothers you and you're not driving (they always came quickly though).
