2016’s Top Spots to Shop
Shopping when on holiday is not only an opportunity to find that special something to remember your holiday by, it’s an opportunity to absorb the sights, sounds and smells of a destination. From the world’s oldest malls to cutting-edge emporiums, check out our top spots to shop in 2016.
Dubai, UAE
Most travellers make a beeline for the big shopping malls of Dubai – there are ski resorts, restaurants, cinemas, aquariums and literally 1000’s of shops to get lost in – but it’s worth braving the heat for a visit to the Gold Souk. Located in Deira, this open air covered market place is a treasure trove for gold of all shapes and sizes. From delicate bracelets to chunky chains, everything is sold based on weight – be prepared to barter for your bling.
Milan, Italy
The Italians love to make a statement and that’s certainly the case when it comes to shopping, especially in Milan, their fashion capital. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of the world’s oldest shopping centres, dating back to the late 1800s. It is a masterpiece of iron and glass work. The beautiful arcade houses an enormous Prada store, along with plenty of luxury boutiques. Walk across the Piazza del Duomo to Milan Cathedral, where you can climb the roof for a bird’s eye view of the city and the arcade’s glass dome.
Delhi, India
A day in Delhi is all you need to feel the beat of this beautiful, chaotic city and there’s no better way to experience it than exploring the hidden rabbit warrens of the markets. The heat kicks in early but many of the markets are open until 9pm so spend the heat of the day by your hotel pool and then head out. Make sure you visit the open air markets at Dilli Haat, where stalls housed in thatched cottages sell Indian handicrafts like brightly coloured woven baskets. Cool off with a stop at a chai wallah for an icy chai.
