San Juan County Travel Guide

Tourist Guide

Beautiful Sunset Over Orcas Island, Washington. Orcas Island is the largest of the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest, which are in the northwestern corner of San Juan County, Washington.
The trail up to turtleback mountain shows the leaves turning its color to the shades of fall. It was a delightful hike up. But admittedly the trail was steep but it didn't bother me since I get to really revel in the beauty of the rich foliage that surrounds me. #roadtrip #takeahike #ontheroad
The view from the summit of Mount Constitution is spectacular, even when Rosario Strait and the surrounding bays are socked in with clouds. Mind you, these are the puffy Reddi Whip kind of clouds, and it is an otherwise beautiful autumn day, but this gives you an idea of what you have in store after a moderate 4.3-mile hike. There is also a road that will take you right to the top, or give you the option to park at several trailheads closer to the summit.

As for this photograph, if you squint very hard (or resort to a monocle) you can see Mount Baker in the distance.
One of the many lakes tucked into Moran State Park and the complex of trails on Mount Constitution. You can either pass by this lake along the eastern Boundary Trail, as we did, or take the relatively flat three-mile loop around it, looking for osprey, eagles and a wide variety of native waterfowl.
Great place for whale watching. Pack a lunch and bring some binoculars and hang out on the rocky shoreline scanning for whales. The scientists based in the lighthouse use a hydrophone to track whale movements and orca behavior in the straight. Step inside to learn more.
