The hotel was fairly close to the town centre we arrived before the pub was open so couldn't park the car there as you need a on street permit so had to go to the town centre car park. The room was cosy and we had a very nice evening meal we tried their pies, the pub was busy with a good atmosphere only a small criticism was the 10 percentage charge on the bill that put a glass on cheap wine over £9.00.

A hidden gem in Winchester. Cosy room with some nice touches like real coffee and a mini cafetière. Friendly staff, and the pub itself does great food. The TV was damaged and had a line across the middle, which was a bit annoying, but obviously we didn’t book the hotel for the TV!
Excellent value and a nice place to use as our base for a few days while visiting family.

Cosy rooms above a great pub.
Fabulous location in a very quiet residential area. Literally 5 minute walk into the city centre. Pub is quirky , warm & welcoming. Our room was spacious , very comfortable beds & fabulously clean . We were treated to loads of tea/coffee , yoghurt, delicious granola, muffins & fruit for breakfast..perfect ! Shower was powerful & hot . Wifi good.
Not a complaint but rooms now in need of a little TLC .
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
We liked:-
- the very individual character of the pub
- proximity to railway station & city centre
- friendly staff
- good quality food (evening meal).
Not so good :-
- our room had a 'dog' smell, particularly noticeable every time we entered the room.
- the lack of a normal breakfast service - no hot food available, and the 'complimentary' snack breakfast had to be eaten in our room, which did not have a dining table or chairs. Surely a breakfast service, even if only continental, could have been provided in the bar area.
The King Alfred Pub is in quiet neighbourhood within an easy 10 minute walk from the train station and an easy 15 minute walk from the city centre, the Cathedral and other attractions. It's a charming pub that serves good pub food and we found our room on the floor above the pub quiet, well appointed, comfortable and in all ways comfortable and convenient. Be advised that the pub is not open before noon and you may have trouble checking in or leaving your bags before that time. The housekeeper was there by 8 am and was happy to keep our bags for the rest of the day on the day we checked out. I would stay there again and highly recommend a room at King Alfred to anyone else.
Lovely old world pub. Well decorated in dark colours. Book lined walls. Cosy leather seats. Great character pub with friendly staff. Please don’t alter it. Great food. Bitter also good. Easy parking.
Parking, room size, room accessibility, lighting in the room very dingy. Needs a major overhaul

Hello RoyI am sorry you were so disappointed.I have to admit to being a little confused. You arrived, parked and we provided you with a free parking permit, so not sure why you mention an issue with parking? You stayed in our twin room, a photo of which is on the Expedia website so I assume you were aware of the room size? Extra lighting could have easily been provided had you mentioned it to a member of our team during your stay which you did not.I cant remember the last time we had such a poor review, we clearly were not the right place for you. All the best, Ali
really loved staying in a pub - clearly a 'local' for the neighborhood.
don't go for the food, classic pub fare unless that is what you enjoy. breakfast is left in your room the night before, there is a small fridge.
really nice and large outdoor patio area. our room was spacious, clean, comfortable. we would stay here again.
Lovely old pub within walking of town centre with free parking .
In room healthy breakfast.
Ideal for an overnight stay on our way from Edinburgh to Portsmouth to catch afternoon ferry.
We had a lovely stay at the King Alfred pub. It's a proper old school pub. Very busy especially as they were showing Englands rugby match. The evening meal we had was really nice. All the staff were very polite and friendly. It's situated in a residential area, close to the Winall moor nature reserve and about 10mins walk from the city centre.
The bed could have been more comfortable, mattress was a bit hard. The bathroom was really cold,no double glazing. The breakfast that was supplied in the room was not really to our liking, muffins and granola. Only small issues that didn't spoil our time away.
Room was comfortable. Breakfast was disappointing, didn't realise it was cereal, yoghurt and muffin in your room. Look forward to bacon and eggs while we are away. Evening meals were very good. Prices were Winchester prices, slightly high.
Extremely friendly and helpful - went out of their way to accomodate us as clinically vulnerable. Restaurant meal excellent. Real coffee and fresh milk in the breakfast basket were a plus. And a teapot! Rest of continental breakfast was a bit of a let down. Very quiet setting and easily walkable to the centre.
Very friendly welcome with comfortable room. Good location short walk to city sights

Was abit quirky as they say but room was to dark and the bathroom lights were very poor I could not even have a shave to dark!!
And we was Expecting a continental breakfast as advertised ! But all it was some bird seed and yogurt and a muffin.
There was milk but had to go downstairs to find some one on the 1st morning:( For milk.
I thought Continental Was cereals and toast !
But this was called simple Continental. In the room only .
Staff and food was good. The only thing I didn’t like was the bag of breakfast. Orange, yoghurt, musslie, muffin, orange juice. We don’t like oranges , and the rest is full of sugar. Bread and a toaster might be an idea. But overall a lovely pub, I would stay there again.
Very good stay, parking is outside the oub, you have to let them know on check in and they give you a permit to display in your car.
Nice room, quirky pub, popular with locals.
Would stay again if in the area.
The King Alfred is an interesting, quirky, characterful place that really reflects the charm of Winchester. Nice warm welcome, friendly service and good food. Highly recommended.
