A tired old lady
First stay at the Fairy Knowe Hotel after 38 years. Lovely to be back in Wilderness the place of my birth 61 years ago in 1955. So the visit was a walk down memory lane in the presence of my oldest brother. Also had an opportunity to visit a project at a primary school in an impoverished part of Hoekwil that is being supported by the Rotary Club of George. Wonderful community service by local Rotarians.
Back to Fairy Knowe Hotel. The hotel is a tired old lady and in need of a make-over or an upgrade. Informed a refurbishment exercise has started and saw evidence thereof. Generally the stay was pleasant although the breakfast was a let down. For example other than bland watermelon and peeled citrus no fresh fruit.
Place is more of a lodge than a hotel. Needs some maintenance... especially the bathrooms, did not feel comfortable! However nice garden setting.
Also, I made a booking for 4 rooms to sleep a total of 9 adults and 3 kids two months prior which was paid for already. On the day of my check in I get called so say that I still have to pay for the kids!!! Felt like i was being held to ransom!
My room was much more "basic" than I expected from the pictures, and definitely not worth 3-stars as advertised. The hotel had no hot water during my stay, and I wasn't told that at check-in, they waited for me to discover it myself. Breakfast was good, but I won't be going back.
Beautiful location, rooms a bit dated, could have been cleaner, also they were very cold at night. Breakfast was a bit lacking in terms of quality, but was sufficient. The guy who checked us in could have been more welcoming, but the lady who did the checkout was lovely.
If the manager on duty the evening I booked in, could smile, I felt so unwelcome.
At morning breakfast, I got the same cold reception from the lady doing the breakfast.
Never again will you see me.
Staff were very pleasant and accommodating. The building is a bit aged as are some of the rooms, but it is a known historical hotel in the area so this was expected. The Rooms are clean and serviced daily though which was more important to us. Breakfast was great. Area is amazing.
This hotel is good for a budget traveller, very basic and value. We were in family room in main building which was tired and a bit drab. Restaurant was excellent value and the wait staff were lovely. Place needs some investment, location fantastic.
The room was spacious with a balcony looking over the river. The hotel also had canoes free of charge to rent.
Sadly the room was dated and smelt very musty though...really in need of a revamp. There was also no heater so we were a little chilly at night.
