The white-sand shorelines of the Whitsunday Islands are some of the most iconic images of Australia's famous beaches. The picturesque Whitsunday Islands off Tropical Queensland's central coast are surrounded by light blue water and are an international holiday destination. Located on the Coral Sea between the Great Barrier Reef and the coast of Queensland, these islands are one of the best places in the world for sailing and marine activities.
There are 74 islands in the Whitsundays. Some have towns and resorts, while others are completely uninhabited. Hamilton Island is one of the most popular destinations in the area. This is a great base for families, with ease of accessibility, a major resort and plenty of activities for every age and budget. For an even more luxurious experience, head to nearby Hayman Island. Adventurous visitors can charter a yacht and explore the islands in their own time.
A trip to the Whitsunday's would not be complete without snorkelling and scuba diving. Explore the underwater world and get up close to the tropical fish and colourful coral that the Coral Sea is renowned for. Dive operators are located on Hamilton Island and there are various packages to suit all levels of experience.
On Whitsunday Island, take a walk along the iconic bright, white sand of Whitehaven Beach, which stretches for nearly 7 kilometers (4 miles). See the breathtaking views from Whitsunday Peak.
Hike in rainforest that runs almost to the shore of many of the islands. Reach the more remote parts of the region by boat or swim straight off the shore, which is a popular way to get around some of the islands.
The Whitsunday Islands have tropical weather year-round and are a popular winter destination. Airports are located on Hamilton Island and at Proserpine on the mainland. Airlie Beach is the gateway to the islands and charter boats and ferries run between here and Hamilton Island. Boats can be hired or chartered to get between the islands.

We had a sea view room and this was excellent, we enjoyed sitting on the couch with our coffee and watching the ferries go past. We liked having our own kitchen facilities, though the stove top, toaster and kettle were looking pretty dated. Wonderful staff that were always helpful.
Our bungalow was centrally located to the pool, beach, resort facilities and walking distance from the town centre.
The beaches are all very rocky + full of coral, not sand, so you can’t really relax on them although they are beautiful
Great resort that comes with a price. We booked through Expedia as a package inc flights and only to receive a email 6 hours later saying it’s time to book your transfer to Hayman Island,( thinking that when you book an package it is included) at $210.00 per person each way!! What took us by ...
