The region
Luxborough is a peaceful hamlet in the Brendon Hills of Exmoor National Park, about 6 miles south of Dunster. Three tiny settlements -- Churchtown, Kingsbridge, and Pooltown -- nestle in a wooded valley at 600 feet.
This is a deeply rural corner of Exmoor where farming and forestry have replaced the iron mining that once sustained the community. The ancient Church of St Mary in Churchtown dates back to the 13th century, with a medieval stone cross in its churchyard that is a scheduled ancient monument. Many of the cottages in the area are thatched, and the pace of life is wonderfully unhurried.
The Washford River rises near Luxborough and flows through the valley, giving the hamlet of Pooltown its name from the many pools along its course. The surrounding woodland is rich with wildlife -- red deer, buzzards, and woodland birds are regularly spotted.
Luxborough has no shops or general stores. The nearest everyday amenities are in Dunster (6 miles north), which has a good range of independent shops, a post office, butcher, and galleries. The market town of Watchet (7 miles northeast) and Minehead (9 miles north) offer supermarkets, pharmacies, and a wider range of services.

Property was quiet and quirky with lovely views across the valley and hills. There’s plenty of local walks and excellent local pub, The Royal Oak. The cottage is within easy distance of major tourist attractions but still hidden away for a quieter break. Would thoroughly recommend.

Exmoor is very dog friendly, and we particularly appreciated that this cottage provides the option of kennels or a boot-room for them. My husband suffers from asthma if we stay anywhere that has allowed dogs on the furniture, and on one past occasion, I was bitten by fleas in the bed. So, it is really good to find somewhere that shares our definition of "dog friendly" and we all had a wonderful time.

This is a quirky, characterful and comfortable house with a gorgeous garden in a beautiful very rural location.
It isn't for those with mobility issues who mind ducking for some low doors, a bit of a slope, or dread meeting a tractor on a single track road.
But if you want seclusion, privacy, beautiful views and stunning (slightly challenging but rewarding) walks from your door; before shedding boots and coats in a big boot room en route to the Aga - then this is a great place to stay.
The weather was mixed when we stayed but the Sky TV and WiFi were great for rainy hours and a bit of home-working. Six adults of split generations and 1 dog enjoyed walks with views to Wales, dark night skies, a sun trap patio, the tallest tree in England, Dunster, Minehead, Porlock Weir and fantastic food on several occasions (it was that good) at the Royal Oak Inn a steep mile away.
Finally, the neighbours were really nice and it felt like the owners genuinely cared that we had a good time.

A really beautiful house with the most stunning views we could have hoped for. We were lucky with the weather and spent afternoons with tea and gin and tonics in the garden in the midst of the hills.
The house is so well equipped with everything we could want. We loved cooking on the aga once we got used to it and we appreciated the things John and Hazel left - especially the. Champagne!
The house was warm and spotlessly clean with a good number of towels. Hot water was plentiful as we used the fab electric showers.
Location wise, it is stunning although a bit remote. You do need to drive to get to shoes etc although we could have walked to the pub if we’d have fancied the hill!
It was lovely to meet John while we were there. Communication with him and Hazel was fantastic throughout.
All in all a really beautiful cottage and the break from it all that we needed.
Many thanks.

The garden and views were stunning, unfortunately because of all the rain we had the lawn couldnt be mowed so it was a bit like a field, not that the dogs minded at all! The house is very quirky due to it originally being three cottages so there are two kitchens and two lounges and the bathroom upstairs goes right across the middle of the house so there are two doors either side to open and lock, soon got used to it. The house was cosy due to the aga being on all the time. There is an electric oven which is old and the oven takes ages. We love Exmoor and was out every day walking the dogs. We had 3 lovely days and three days sunshine and showers the Doone valley was our favourite day. We did go to the Royal Oak in the village and had a very nice meal there with friendly staff. There are 3 birdfeeders in the garden and it was lovely to hear and see them every day, they are very greedy and got through the seeds in record time! There is no phone signal there but that is usual on Exmoor. A bottle of champagne, lemon drizzle cake and flowers were left which was fantastic and much appreciated. We eally had a lovely time and enjoyed the quiet and very comfortable beds. It was a well equipped house and we would definately recommend it.
