Tourist Guide
Tonga
Glorious sunsets, hiking trails through rugged terrain and a friendly culture await in this gorgeous tropical paradise that moves at its own pace: island time.

Visit Tonga to discover 176 islands, where sun and sand abound. This Polynesian kingdom in the southern Pacific Ocean features alluring blue waters, photogenic natural wonders and plenty of space to spread out on remote beaches. Go whale watching along the shore, walk across a rocky bridge and discover hidden caves.

While the Tongan landscape is mostly rugged and wild, the nation is continuing to develop its tourism industry and for the most part, locals are genuinely happy to show you their island. In fact, Tonga is known as the “Friendly Islands” due to the warm reception received by Captain James Cook when he first visited in 1773.

Most tourists touch down on the main island of Tongatapu. Once here, head to Ha’atafu Beach for stunning sunsets, calm swimming and whale watching from June to November. Marvel at the power of Mother Nature at Mapu’a ‘a Vaea Blowholes, where plumes of water burst up from the ground and into the sky.

Visit Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, to immerse yourself in Tongan culture at the bustling Talamahu Market. Speak with local vendors, try fresh tropical fruits and purchase locally made arts and crafts at the outdoor stalls.

Southeast of Tongatapu is the wild island of ‘Eua. Explore its caves and rainforests and look for some of the fascinating feathered species, such as the red shining parrot, that call the island home. Pause at lookouts along clifftops to photograph stunning views.

Fly into Tonga from New Zealand, Australia or Fiji. Alternatively, take a yacht from surrounding islands such as Samoa or the Cook Islands. Plan a trip from June through October for warm water and a bustling atmosphere. November through March is the wet season, but there are still plenty of activities to enjoy.

Be sure to bring conservative clothing, as Tonga’s religious culture means that it’s not acceptable to wear revealing clothing such as bikinis or short skirts in public. Check with your resort about policies on private beaches.
