"Our stay in the temple was a really special way to end our trip in Japan. We really appreciated the serenity of the location and the grounds. The interaction with the monks was lovely. This type of stay is not for everyone please have you expectations set to get the most out of this experience. Check in closes at 5pm. This is because dinner (include in half board) is served at 5.30pm. The meal consists of a traditional Japanese Buddhist meal of about 10 dishes including tofo, rice, soup, pickles and veg. There are no animal products in this meal. Servives on low tables sitting on the tatami Matt floor. I am sure arrangement could be made if you are unable to sit on the floor. If you are used to a large meal this won’t fill you, but you can get snacks in the local family mark. The traditional hot bath is wonderful. Open from 4.30pm to 10pm. Men and women separate you shower before entering the bath. Towel and toiletries are provided. Much needed if you have hiked up the mountain. The room is a basic tatami flooring with futons. Simple but comfortable- maybe a little hard for some. There are only shared bathrooms, but they are very clean and comfortable. The temple is closed at 9pm. So there is time after dinner and mediation to take in some of the night lights in town. We were invited to join a meditation and morning chanting (6.30am) and the monks explained some Buddhist philosophy. Breakfast is modest and served at 7.20am"

"Incredible. The vegetarian dishes were the best we ever had. Our room, the semi-suite was luxurious and welcoming. The staff was friendly and spoke very good English. We do not regret going to Koya and staying at the Ekoin. It was definitely a highlight in our trip. From the ceremonies to the food to the cemetery tour at night with an amazing guide. "

"Excellent onsen hotel right at the end of the first day of the Kohechi Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. I came for the onsen and mountain seclusion, but they had such good maps of the Kohechi at the front desk that I decided to walk back to Koyasan the day I checked out. It’s about 20km through the mountains from Nosegawa Onsen to Koyasan, walking on a mix of well-kept trails and paved roads; overall, a moderately difficult hike with very good signage. I highly recommend Kohechi hikers to stay at this hotel."

"Dinning is more than expected"

"This is not a hotel, but accommodation inside of a temple. There is basically no service. I stayed in one of the room inside the temple, which is quite a walk from the entrance and on the second floor. There is no toilet or sink in our room. There are rooms in a new building beside the entrance which has toilets and sinks. All rooms have no bathroom, there is a public bath which is opened from 4-10pm. They dont provide meals anymore. There is morning prayer you can watch at 6:30am. I will recommend staying for one night if you want the experience. "

"Staying at Fugen-in Temple in Koyasan was an incredible experience. The atmosphere is peaceful, the staff are welcoming and kind, and everything was beautifully taken care of. The room are clean, spacious and beautifully decorated. The temple is located right in the heart of Koyasan, which made it very easy to walk everywhere and explore this magical place. Koyasan itself is truly unforgettable, and staying here made the visit even more special. I am very happy I chose Fugen-in Temple and would certainly recommend it to anyone visiting. I hope to return one day!"

"Tucked away above the bar/cafe, this onsen was absolutely wonderful. The rooms were very traditional in the Japanese style, and we had access to the entire area as we were the only guests staying on that night. The staff were completely lovely and helpful. The showers and toilets were well kept and clean, and the beds were very comfortable. The location is perfect to walk around and explore Koyasan. Definitely worth a visit!"
