Learn about the exciting stories and scientific innovation of the Strategic Air Command’s aircraft and artifacts at this expansive museum.

The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum is one of the best-equipped museums in the country for revealing the fascinating history of the United States Airforce and the Strategic Air Command. Explore two aircraft hangars, a glass atrium, a collection of galleries and a theatre, all spread over 300,000 square feet (28,000 square metres) of exhibition and event space.

In front of the museum, you’ll see three large missiles pointing toward the sky. Check out the magnificent glass-paneled atrium that houses a sleek Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. The museum is focused on the tense decades that followed the end of World War II, including the Cold War years and security innovations of the modern age. Enter the light-filled hangars and discover a collection of beautifully restored aircraft. Look up to see the Lockheed U-2C Dragon Lady, hung high in the hangar’s roof.

Check out the Avro Vulcan, one of only three on display in the country. Examine the collection of Boeing aircraft, as well as a perfectly preserved Thunderchief and a Goblin. Wander around the displayed aircraft and learn about each artifact’s fascinating role in aviation technology and the history of national security.

Explore the gallery space dedicated to temporary exhibitions and see the curated artifacts on display. Kids can have a hands-on learning experience at the children’s interactive gallery. They’ll also love the museum’s motion-simulator rides, which include roller coaster and helicopter programmes. The inflatable space shuttle bouncer is also plenty of fun for younger kids.

Find out what’s programmed to be screened or presented at the museum’s 200-seat theatre. Join one of the museum’s daily tours or check out the seasonal astronomy programme at the museum’s mobile planetarium. Souvenirs can be purchased at the museum gift shop. The museum’s café serves quick snacks and refreshments.

The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum is located southeast of Ashland and is approximately a half-hour drive from Omaha. The museum is open daily, except for select public holidays. There is an admission fee, which is half-price for children under 12. Free on-site parking is available and the museum is wheelchair accessible.
