Vast and scenic gardens, a zoo and an observatory are among the highlights in a quarter entwined with the European Union.

Orangerie is a leafy neighbourhood of gardens, historic buildings and museums. The quarter is known for its namesake gardens and the sleek buildings of the European Union. Make your way around the meandering paths of the Parc de l’Orangerie and appreciate the utter tranquility in this green part of the city.

Relax with a picnic beside the large lake and rent a boat to take out on the water. Admire the waterfall and walk out to the terrace overlooking the lake. From the top of a hill you’ll have excellent views of the fountain. Today, the Parc de l’Orangerie has only three remaining orange trees, which you can see inside the greenhouses.

Bring the whole family to participate in the activities in this fun park, which has a bowling alley and a zoo. Spot flamingos and the Siberian lynx among the many animals. Take the little ones to the mini-farm.

Continue the theme of animals in the nearby Strasbourg Zoological Museum, which has fascinating displays of stuffed animals. Kids will love the polar bear and chimpanzee.

Beside the museum are the Botanical Gardens. Marvel at the sheer size of the sequoia trees and see the tropical plants in the greenhouses. Here, you’ll find the Strasbourg Observatory and its Star Crypt museum featuring vintage telescopes and clocks.

At the northern tip of the neighbourhood are the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. Appreciate the modern design of these glassy buildings and learn about the political importance of Strasbourg to Europe.

The Orangerie district occupies the northeastern corner of Strasbourg. Drive northeast for 10 minutes from the Cathédrale Notre Dame de Strasbourg in the heart of the city to get here. You can also travel by bus to one of the many stops dotted along the edges of the Parc de l’Orangerie. Visit the nearby districts of Contades, Vauban and Neustadt.
