Make a day of it at this beach where you can laze on a deck chair, swim in clear water and dine at seafood restaurants.

One of the area’s largest beaches, Spisone Beach is a curved bay made up of golden sand and pebbles facing the Ionian Sea. Framing the strand are rocky promontories and coves that add to the dramatic views, while the crystal clear water is ideal for swimmers. Do some sunbathing or have a picnic with your family on this picturesque stretch of sand.

Go for a walk along the length of the bay and encounter intriguing rock formations. The Rock of Zio Gennaro island marks the southeastern end of the Spisone Bay. Wander out on one of the stone islets that dot the water and capture photos of the rest of the small gray landmasses that rise above the blue surface.

The beach is a local hangout but it is rarely overcrowded. Enjoy Italian cuisine and succulent seafood at one of the restaurants backing onto the bay. Go swimming with your friends in the water, which is clean and has a smooth floor devoid of big rocks.

Venture north to cross into the Stockholm Lido and the Re del Sol Lido, where you’ll find a couple of restaurants and a beach club. At the southern end lie the smaller beaches of Mazzarò. Stay in this Spisone region for the spectacular sunset and head to one of the bars and nightclubs for evening cocktails and entertainment.

Note that much of the Spisone Beach is free and open to the public at all times. Some sections are private, so you’ll have to pay to rent deck chairs and umbrellas.

Spisone Beach is at the foot of Monte Tauro, on which Taormina perches. From the town center, drive east down the hill for about 10 minutes to get to the strand. You can also ride a bus down to the bay. Visit some of the nearby sights, such as the Grotta Azzurra, the Teatro Antico di Taormina and the San Pancrazio Church.
