Stroll along the dramatic, rocky coastline and discover a history of smuggling operations at this pretty bay in southwest Nova Scotia.

Get close to nature and enjoy outdoor activities at Smugglers Cove Provincial Park. Hike along a cliff-top path, enjoy a swim in the ocean and look out for lots of local birdlife.

During the time of Prohibition in the early 20th century, liquor was smuggled into the area from here, hence its name. Today, the picturesque park and its beach are popular weekend getaway spots.

At high tide the cove is filled with water, but during low tide, the beach is easily accessible. Make your way down the long staircase to the small stretch of shingle. Dip your toes in the water or go for a swim, and look for the cave that is not visible to passing vessels. For years, bottles of rum were hidden here before they were secretly transported to the USA.

After your swim, head back up the stairs to the field that overlooks the cove. With several wooden tables, this is a good place for a picnic.

Set off along the path that winds along the cliff top. Stop at the lookout platforms and gaze out over the sea. From high up on the cliffs you should be able to spot a variety of seabirds such as gannets and cormorants.

Be sure to check out the interpretative panels that are dotted along the main walking route. The information on these panels covers the history of Smugglers Cove and feature stories of the illicit smuggling operations. Read about secret meetings, police raids and shipwrecks.

Smugglers Cove Provincial Park is located on the southwest corner of Nova Scotia just south of the fishing commune of Meteghan. The park is open between May and October and entry is free. It is a 40-minute drive north from the town of Yarmouth.
