Singapore has long been home to a large Indian community, evidence of which can most clearly be seen in the area of Little India, east of the Singapore River around Serangoon Road. This is a fascinating chunk of the city to visit, as it has managed to accommodate its growing popularity amongst tourists without losing its authentic atmosphere and thriving street trade. While most people come here initially to sample the city's best Indian cuisine, they usually stay for the brightly coloured flowers, charming streets and wealth of Indian culture and heritage.South Indian culture reigns supreme along Serangoon Road with its traditional architecture and beautiful temples. One of the most impressive of these structures is Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Take the time to remove your shoes and step from the bustling street into its cool, calm interior – this temple provides a haven of tranquillity a million miles from the frenzy of the surrounding streets.Head over to Tekka Market for the ultimate assault on the senses. The aromas wafting through the air are so distinct here you can almost taste them, while the variety of colour far outstrips any other part of Little India. This covered market is almost always thronged with people, but it's well worth braving the crowds for the sheer variety of cheap, tasty food and colourful souvenirs on offer. If the buzz of the market is a bit much for you, there are a wide range of restaurants in Little India offering a more serene dining experience. Try tarik, the local variety of Indian chai, and make sure to let the chef know if you don't want your curry too spicy – you might regret it if you don't!Little India is located east of the Singapore River. It is easy to reach on foot and is also served by the Little India MRT station. There is plentiful parking here, but most of it requires payment.
