Silk Exchange

Get a feel for Valencia’s past within the medieval architecture and historic halls at this collection of buildings that once saw merchants exchange their wares.

Visit La Lonja, a complex of Gothic buildings that were once the centre of Valencia’s silk and oil trade. This World Heritage Site dates back as far as 1482. Today it serves as a monument to Valencia’s affluent past as one of the great Mediterranean ports.

The Sala de Contraction is the main hall where traders would congregate to make deals. Admire the hall’s five rows of spiral columns that divide the room into three aisles, all with intricately patterned floors. A Latin inscription on the walls reminded traders of the importance of honesty.

Through a doorway in the main hall you’ll find the building’s tower. A spiral staircase leads you up through the tower’s different levels, which include a small chapel and a prison that once held bankrupt merchants.

Visit the impressive Consulado building, which is lit up by ornately decorated windows. Today you can see exhibitions and performances here at the Cultural Academy of Valencia. Times and tickets for events can be found at the main entrance.

Be sure to capture a photo of the building’s Gothic exterior. The gargoyles and sculpted busts of famous figures, which adorn the building’s façade, are best seen from across the street at the Church of Santos Juanes (San Juan del Mercado).

Sample some fine foods at Valencia’s Central Market not far from La Lonja. This bustling food centre features some of the best locally sourced treats in the city.

La Lonja is located in Valencia’s Old Town, close to many of the city’s major attractions. Drive and park for a fee at the nearby Central Market or get the bus to La Lonja’s entrance.

La Lonja is open all week except on Mondays. For a modest entrance price you get a map that includes information in English.
