There is a range of entertainment offered in the City of Arts and Sciences, a futuristic cultural centre. This 2-kilometre (1.2-mile) complex features an aquarium with more than 500 marine species, science and technology exhibits, 3-D shows and operas performed in a concert hall.
The Oceanogràfic aquarium houses one of Spain’s largest collections of marine species. The aquarium features the ecosystems of Antarctica, the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, among others. Tunnels and glass viewing points let you see the behaviour of sharks, rays, penguins and dolphins up close. Stop for a memorable lunch at the underwater restaurant.
Continue to the Hemisfèric, which displays 3-D movies on a domed IMAX cinema screen. Outside you can see the building’s reflection in the lake. The reflection looks like an eye because of the Hemisfèric’s futuristic design.
Kids will love the Science Museum, where interactive exhibits make learning fun. Watch the activities of ants in their nests and see a 15-metre (49-foot) model of a DNA molecule.
Stroll along the Umbracle to capture some of the best photos of the modern complex. Along this free walkway and vantage point you’ll also find outdoor art exhibitions and an exotic garden.
Buy a ticket to one of the events at the Agora arena and see a tennis tournament or concert. Reserve a seat for an opera or classical musical performance in the Palau de les Arts opera house or book a guided tour of its four exhibition halls for a fee. The City of Arts and Sciences is a short bus, tram or car trip from Valencia’s Old Town. On-site car parking is available for a fee. If you’re feeling energetic take the 45-minute walk across Turía Gardens from Old Town.
