Most travellers to Malaysia pass through Sepang due to the fact that the Kuala Lumpur International Airport is located here. But Sepang has plenty of attractions of its own, including Malaysia’s main complex for motorsports. Racing fans will love watching an event at this state-of-the-art stadium. Sepang is also the perfect gateway to southern Malaysia, with its charming villages, palm oil plantations and peaceful beach towns.
Start out at Sepang’s main attraction, the Sepang International Circuit. International racing events are held here regularly, including the Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix and more. If you are a fan of racing, time your visit to coincide with one of these high-profile events. Tickets are reasonably priced and should be purchased online in advance. Take a tour of the stadium or get behind the wheel yourself and take the kids for a few laps around the go-kart track.
Explore the area surrounding Sepang to see what small-town Malaysia is like. Visit the colourful town of Sungai Pelek with its historic buildings, inexpensive shops and restaurants. Take a tour of the surrounding rural area and discover palm oil plantations and a dragon fruit farm, where you can try samples of this unusual-looking but tasty fruit.
Further south on the Malaysian coast lies the town of Bagan Lalang. With a beautiful beach and various kinds of boats for rent, this coastal village is set to become a popular resort town. Venture out on the waters of the Malacca Strait in a canoe and even cast a line to catch some local fish. Otherwise, stay on land and sample some local seafood at one of the town’s restaurants. Bagan Lalang is also a great spot for bird-watching.
Broaden your experience of Malaysia beyond its glittering capital in this quaint southern region. Motorsports fans will especially appreciate the visit but other travellers will certainly find something to enjoy in this diverse area.
