Medellín’s city zoo houses a great range of animals in a converted ranch once owned by an aristocrat.

Visit Medellín’s primary zoo, the well-equipped Santa Fe Zoological Park, to see all manner of animals as well as a fascinating museum housed in an aristocratic mansion. The house and its grounds were donated to the city by its former owner and now this complex delights the public with its various displays. Wander through the old mansion, then see big cats, tropical animals, monkeys, birds and more. Look out for the famous capybara, the world’s largest rodent species.

The site of the Santa Fe Zoological Park spent the first half of the 20th century as a ranch under aristocratic ownership. In 1951, its owner donated the property to the city of Medellín and in 1961 it was opened as a zoo. Now it hosts over 1,000 animals, which range from the familiar to the weird and wonderful.

Head to the owner’s original house, which has been kept largely as she left it and opened to the public as the Casa Santa Fe Museum. Explore the rooms of the mansion and admire its ornate fountain, tiled in Arabic style. Outside the house is a pleasing and well-maintained garden.

The centrepiece of the Santa Fe zoo, however, is its impressive collection of animals. These creatures great and small are drawn from all over the continent as well as North America, Africa and Asia. Drop in to see the monkeys, then visit the aviary to see colourful birds and to listen to their song.

Get up close for a good look at the zoo’s fearsome big cats. Jaguars, pumas and Bengal tigers are all on display. Check out the exotic animals that are housed in the tropical section.

The Santa Fe Zoological Park is located in the south of Medellín. It is a few blocks’ walk from the Industriales subway station, or an easy cab ride from the nearby Poblado district. Parking is also available for a fee. The zoo is open from morning until late afternoon, every day of the year. Entrance is half-price for children and free for toddlers.
