"Apartment is a compact 1 bedroom in a good location close to transit, parks, and shops. It faces the courtyard and doesn't get direct sun for most ofthe day, and the bedroom has no windows. Several lightbulbs were burnt out so at night it was very dim. Check-in was partially explained - I got the key from a lockbox but hauled all my stuff up five flights of stairs before calling the host to learn that I needed to go down a side hallway, which had an elevator that wasn't mentioned in the listing...

Old Town Riga

Step back in time as you wander the cobblestone streets of Old Town Riga. Medieval spires and colourful merchant houses create a storybook setting in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gothic cathedrals and ornate guildhalls reveal Latvia's rich past at every turn. The pedestrian-friendly district invites exploration of architectural treasures like the Three Brothers and House of Blackheads. Traditional restaurants serve hearty Latvian cuisine in atmospheric medieval cellars. Amber shops and craft boutiques offer authentic souvenirs between historic squares and hidden courtyards.

Centrs

Old Town Riga's UNESCO-protected Centrs district dazzles with Art Nouveau splendour along Alberta Street. Medieval spires rise from cobblestone squares while the Freedom Monument stands tall on Brīvības Boulevard. Centuries of architecture blend harmoniously across this walkable cultural heart of Latvia. Visitors can explore world-class museums or catch performances at the ornate Latvian National Opera. Winding streets reveal amber jewellery shops, medieval cellar restaurants, and hidden courtyards. The Daugava River provides scenic backdrops for this fairy-tale area where history comes alive.

Agenskalns

Art Nouveau buildings with ornate facades line quiet streets. The riverfront offers peaceful walking paths and scenic views. Locals go about their daily lives far from tourist crowds. The cultural heart of Agenskalns is Kalnciema Quarter, famous for weekend farmers' markets and outdoor concerts. Visit the Latvian Railway History Museum or stroll through Uzvaras Park. Trams and buses connect you to central Riga in just 15 minutes.

Andrejsala

This former port area along the Daugava River has transformed into Andrejsala, Riga's creative district. Art lovers can explore contemporary galleries housed in converted warehouses with industrial-chic design. The atmospheric riverfront offers scenic harbour views and walking paths for enjoying city panoramas. Cultural events and festivals bring the area to life throughout the year. Trendy cafes serve modern Latvian cuisine in spaces where concrete meets artistic installations. Visitors can discover artist studios, pop-up exhibitions, and creative workshops while exploring the cobblestone paths between repurposed brick buildings.

Zemgale Suburb

Zemgale Suburb offers a peaceful residential escape from Riga's bustling centre. Soviet-era apartments stand alongside newer developments, creating an authentic slice of local Latvian life. The Mārupīte River valley provides green spaces for relaxing walks and bird-watching. Budget-conscious travellers will appreciate the affordable accommodation and dining options. When is the best time to go to Riga?
The best time to go to Riga is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is at its warmest and most pleasant.During this period, you can expect average temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and enjoying its many parks and open-air cafes. The days are also exceptionally long, with daylight lasting well into the evening, providing more time for sightseeing.Couples looking for a romantic getaway will find the summer particularly appealing. You can enjoy leisurely strolls through the charming Old Town, take a boat trip along the Daugava River, or relax on the beaches of Jurmala, which is just a short train ride away. Many outdoor concerts and festivals also take place during these months, adding to the city's lively option. For those who prefer a slightly quieter experience with pleasant weather, late spring (May) and early autumn (September) are also good options.
Where can I find the best nightlife in Riga?
Riga offers a varied nightlife, with options ranging from sophisticated cocktail bars to lively clubs, primarily concentrated in the Old Town and a few areas beyond. The Old Town (Vecrīga) is the primary destination for nightlife. Its narrow, cobbled streets are packed with bars, pubs, and clubs, many housed in historic buildings. You'll find a mix of venues, from those offering live music, often jazz or local bands, to dance clubs playing electronic music and commercial hits. There are also numerous cocktail lounges and traditional pubs. The area around Kaļķu iela and Mārstaļu iela is particularly dense with options.Just outside the Old Town, the area around Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela, in the Art Nouveau district, features more upscale bars and lounges. Here, the focus is often on well-crafted cocktails and a more relaxed, but still refined, atmosphere. These venues tend to be quieter and more conducive to conversation than the Old Town's busier spots. For a slightly different feel, the Miera iela (Peace Street) district offers a more bohemian selection of bars and cafes that often host small musical performances or DJ sets. It's less about large clubs and more about independent establishments with a local following.
