Rapahoe Beach showing rocky coastline and waves

A small cluster of houses and some oceanfront accommodation mark one of the Great Coast Road’s sleepy enclaves, an ideal place to put your feet up.

On the coast north of Greymouth you’ll find a laid-back beach community where time seems to move slower. Rapahoe Beach is a stunning stretch of New Zealand’s west coast and in the warmer months is a popular swimming beach. In winter, the wild conditions of the Tasman Sea create a spectacle worthy of an extended look. Although Rapahoe Beach is little more than a few houses and hotels with ocean views, it’s still close to the services of bustling Greymouth. Come to the small village to be surrounded by the natural beauty and remoteness of the South Island’s undulating landscape.

Pack a picnic lunch and beach towel and head down to Rapahoe Beach for a day of swimming, sunbathing and relaxation. While the South Island may not be famous for its hot summers, when the weather does decide to turn it on it’s something special. In summer, lifeguards patrol the beach on weekends and the conditions are often ideal for families. Swim in the refreshing water of the Tasman Sea or bring your surfboard to catch some waves. Surf conditions are ideal when the swells aren’t too big. Long boarders and beginners will enjoy the slow-moving waves.

Watch as horse riders trot along the sand or sign up for your own horseback tour from Greymouth. Rapahoe Beach is located immediately adjacent to the Rapahoe Range Scenic Reserve. Head out on a pleasant hike through the reserve to see local birds and coastal shrubs.

Rapahoe Beach is located just 10 minutes’ drive north of Greymouth. There is ample free parking along the foreshore. Note that there are limited services available within the community so pick up supplies from Greymouth if you plan to spend the day on the beach.
