Divein the water, get a sweat up with beach volleyball or explore picturesquecoastal parkland in one of Marseille’s favourite summer destinations.
Whether in need of a swim, a drink or a leisurely stroll, find a relaxing solution to your needs at Prado Beach. This spectacular location is home to coastal parkland alongside a popular promenade and water sports for the adventurous, and all framed by the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.
Before the 20th century, visitors to Marseille did not come for its beaches. In fact, prior to a coastal construction project in the 1970s, designed to give locals access to beaches, Prado Beach did not exist. These days join the throngs of visitors each summer who flock to the gorgeous parkland and white-sanded product of this engineering feat.
On hot summer days, hire equipment and explore the water on sailboards and kayaks. Alternatively, get your eyes below the water’s surface and spot local marine life with snorkels and fins, which are available for loan along the promenade. A beachside stadium hosts a number of year-round sporting events and group activities, including ball games and BMX.
Dry off after a swim with a pleasant walk through the Parc Balnéair just next to the beach. This 26-hectare (64-acre)stretch of lawns and play areas along the Mediterranean coastline is home to skate parks and a must-see replica of Michelangelo’s David statue.
In September the beach’s annual Festival of the Wind makes for a spectacular sight. Watch in awe as over 100,000 kite-makers and avid enthusiasts float their creations on the coastal winds.
Combine a trip to the beach with a walk to the nearby Borély Park. From here you can explore the nearby Borély Beach and ride its giant Ferris wheel.
Access Prado Beach by a 20-minute bus trip from the city centre. The summer crowds are catered for with hourly boat shuttle service to Prado from Vieux Port. Public bathrooms, changing facilities and wheelchair ramps are provided for visitor comfort and accessibility. The beach stadium charges a small admission for summer activities.
