This interactive museum for children under 10 offers an exciting educational package of climbing, fantasy and adventure.

Port Discovery is very different from most museums. The core of the building is made up of a huge climbing structure, so the museum allows children to stretch not only their minds but their bodies as well. Catering for children from 2 to 10 years old, there is a great variety of fun activities, educational programmes and interactive exhibits that will keep them occupied for hours.

There is a real emphasis on learning through play here, and there are some really imaginative original features, such as KidWorks, an urban tree house covering all three floors of the museum, and Kick It Up!, an indoor football stadium that doubles as an exercise hall on the days when there is no match on.

Sport-centred activities aren’t the only activities that are available here. Head to the Mystery House where children can take on the role of detective to solve the mystery disappearance of the Baffeld family. Over in Nano, the emphasis is on science and there are plenty of experiments to observe or take part in. There is also a simulated archaeological expedition that allows children to try and decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Be prepared for your children to get wet in Wonders Of Water, where they get to make a bit of a splash. Toddlers are well catered for too with Tots Trail, which is full of tiny replicas of Maryland landmarks and a miniature market at Harvest Hill.

Port Discovery can be found in the Power Plant Live! area two blocks north of the Inner Harbor. There is metered parking nearby and various public transport options including the Charm City Circulator, a free shuttle bus service.

The museum is open every day. However, the opening hours do change throughout the year. Due to the physical nature of the activities on offer, children are required to wear trainers at KidWorks. There is an entrance fee and you should give yourself plenty of time to really get the most out of your visit.
