Take a ride on the railway and learn about its history at the home of America’s first commuter railway line.

Situated on a 16-hectare site at the starting point of America’s first commuter railway line, the B&O Railroad Museum houses one of the world’s oldest railway collections. Marvel at the collection of 150 steam, diesel and electric locomotives, rolling stock and relics from the earliest days of the railway industry. This is a perfect day out for the whole family.

The first tracks for a commuter railway line were laid here in 1828. The journey would take passengers from this site in Baltimore to the Ohio River, which is why it was called the B&O Railroad. The tracks still remain today and are one of the museum’s many exhibits. The B&O Railroad Depot was also the first place to receive a message via telegram. It was from Samuel Morse, who sent the message “What hath God wrought?” along a line from Washington D.C. in 1844.

Visitors can still climb aboard a train and take the 20-minute journey along the country’s first commuter railway line. The old signalling, locomotives and the china used for catering are still on display. The original manufacturing complex, now a National Historic Landmark, can be explored at Mount Clare Shops. You can also visit the Roundhouse, where America’s first steam train, Tom Thumb, was built.

Children are well catered for at the museum, with a carousel and a miniature train ride through the fictional land of Choo Choo Blueville. There are also plenty of educational activities in the Kids Zone. At weekends, a storyteller tells a classic tale about the railway, and children can then take part in a game based on this tale.

Situated 10 minutes’ drive west of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the B&O Railroad Museum is open every day. The Charm City Circulator stops there, and free parking is available on site. Train rides do not operate on Mondays and Tuesdays or during the colder winter months. An entrance fee is charged, which is discounted for children under 12. You will require extra tickets to access Mount Clare Museum House and America’s oldest remaining passenger station, Ellicott City Station.
