Watch the moving deck revolve to let boats pass alongside this historic steel bridge between the old and new peninsulas.

Ponte Girevole is a 19th-century rotating steel structure connecting the Borgo Antico (Old Town) island with the Borgo Nuovo (New Town) peninsula. It comprises two driving lanes and a pair of pedestrian sidewalks. Enjoy the scenic views of the water, with the many white sails of the boats racing along with the wind.

Get the best views of the bridge by taking a boat out on the water beneath it. See the elegant site at night, when its lanterns bathe it in warm light. Walk to the center of the structure, which is 292 feet (89 meters) long and 31 feet (9 meters) wide.

See the bridge’s deck revolve to allow the passing of large military vessels to the naval docks. It takes about 20 minutes to open and close the crossing. Marvel at the impressive engineering work of this 19th-century icon of Taranto.

Snap photos of the historic attractions that surround the bridge. Among the highlights is the Aragonese Castle, which dates back to the late 15th century. Admire the wide, short towers of this intriguing structure, which is open for guided tours.

Stroll through the picturesque area enclosing the bridge and see the Monumento al Marinaio (Monument to the Mariner). It portrays a pair of sailors appearing to greet ships.

The bridge was opened by Admiral Ferdinando Acton in 1887 and is today free to access and open at all times.

Ponte Girevole marks the meeting of the Old Town and New Town peninsulas in the center of the city. Take a bus or train to the Taranto Railway Station and walk south for 20 minutes to get to the bridge. Visit nearby sights, such as the Ipogeo Frantoio, the Ponte di Porta Napoli and the Porto Mercantile.
