The Ontario Science Centre opened in 1969 and has become a firm favourite for family and group outings with a difference. Over 600 hands-on activities and displays are arranged across ten fascinating themed exhibits, allowing you to explore every facet of science from anthropology to zoology.David Rokeby’s Cloud dominates the Great Hall as you start your visit. This computerised kinetic sculpture contains 100 blue and transparent square panels that rotate into a variety of fantastic shapes. Commissioned by the Science Centre and unveiled in 2007, the artwork simulates the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas.At the Living Earth exhibit you can walk through a lifelike rainforest and come face to face with some of the weird and wonderful creatures that live in this habitat, such as poison dart frogs and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The Amazing Aging Machine will show you what to expect in fifty years’ time, while the kids will love the hands-on activities in the KidSpark hall. See a rock from outer space, visit the recently refurbished Planetarium for stunning views of the heavens, or delve into the mysteries of the human brain.For an additional charge you can watch a film in the on-site Omnimax cinema. The vast wraparound screen is surrounded by more than 40 speakers, offering an intense yet intimate viewing experience.A popular feature of the centre’s regular programme is the Saturday Sleepover, which includes science workshops, stargazing, a film show at the Omnimax cinema and indoor overnight camping. The Sleepovers only take place in spring, so check the website for full details.The science centre is spread across three purpose-built exhibition halls that follow the contours of the Don river. Navigating between the buildings is easy, with a network of interconnecting bridges, escalators and lifts. Prams and wheelchairs are freely available for the use of visitors. Buses stop outside the main entrance and there is paid parking on site.Ontario Science Centre is open every day except Christmas Day, with longer opening hours during weekends and public holidays.
