Come to Cologne’s former market for a relaxing drink, stay to admire the architecture and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
Cologne’s Alter Markt, or “Old Market” has been the heart of the city for centuries. Today, it continues to play a major role in the cultural life of Cologne and attracts locals and visitors.
When the Romans first colonised the west bank of the Rhine in the first century BC, the area where the Alter Markt stands today was used as a harbour. Fast-forward several hundred years, and this square formed the centre of the largest city in medieval Germany, hosting traders from many different lands and jousting tournaments.
Visitors will still find many of the original ancient buildings and statues standing, along with some more modern additions – a perfect example of how this city has managed to evolve over time whilst still retaining its heritage. Sit back in one of the many cafés on the Alter Markt and watch the world go by, whilst sipping a traditional local beer.
Cologne marks three festival periods over the year, all of which start in or around the Alter Markt. Live open-air concerts mark the start of the season on 11 November. At Christmas, crowds flock to the square to visit its world-famous Christmas market, complete with a skating rink, food stalls and beautiful decorations. Don’t forget to sample some of the local ‘Glühwein’. Germany has its very own version of Mardi Gras: “Karneval”, which starts here on the Thursday before Lent and is marked with costumes and partying. And during the summer months, there is always something going on in this fantastic outdoor space on the banks of the Rhine.
Alter Markt is located in the centre of Cologne, on the west bank of the river, just a short walk south of Cologne Cathedral. The easiest way to get here is using public transport and the nearest U-Bahn stations are Heumarkt and Dom/Hauptbahnhof.
