The best area to stay on the North Shore is Evanston, particularly the downtown area near Northwestern University.

Evanston is a vibrant college town with a distinctive character, offering a mix of urban amenities and lakeside charm. Its downtown area, especially along Davis Street and Church Street, features a wide array of excellent restaurants, independent boutiques, and cultural venues. Public transport links, including the 'L' train, provide easy access to Chicago.

Couples looking for a sophisticated getaway will appreciate Evanston. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along Lake Michigan, visit the beautiful Northwestern University campus, or catch a show at one of the local theatres. The dining scene here is particularly good, ranging from casual eateries to upscale dining experiences.

For families, Evanston offers a comfortable and engaging base. The lakefront parks, such as Lighthouse Beach, are ideal for spending an afternoon outdoors.

The best time to visit the North Shore in Illinois is during late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October).

These periods offer pleasant weather, ideal for exploring the area's parks, gardens, and charming downtowns without the intense heat and humidity of summer or the chill of winter. The foliage in autumn, particularly along Sheridan Road, is quite beautiful.

Couples looking for a relaxing getaway will appreciate the quieter atmosphere during these shoulder seasons. You can enjoy strolls along the lakefront paths, visit historic estates, or browse the independent boutiques in towns like Lake Forest or Winnetka at a more leisurely pace. Many of the area's fine dining establishments also offer a more intimate experience outside the peak summer months.

For families, late spring and early autumn provide comfortable conditions for outdoor activities without the crowds associated with summer holidays.
