A pretty town with wineries waiting to be explored. Visit the spa, catch a show, or enjoy a bite to eat, while uncovering its proud history.

Located on Lake Ontario’s south-west shore, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a picturesque town not to be missed, offering plenty for visitors to see and enjoy. When you arrive, you’ll be met by the sight of its charming 18th and 19th century houses, many of which have been converted to serve as inns and accommodation, ideal if you’re looking for an overnight stay.

Marvel at the colourful, flower-filled parks and gardens that burst into life burst during the warmer months. Explore the shops where you’ll be tempted with fine produce from around the region, as well as charming restaurants and pubs that offer mouth-watering food and great wines – thanks in no small part to the wine regions of Canada, which surround this whole area.

Start by walking down Queen Street in the Heritage District. Browse the shop windows as you wander by, or try some of the local wine and cheese before heading off for some serious relaxation on one of the beaches around this are. If you have the energy, play a round or two of golf on the course that stretches along the lake’s south-west shore. If not, hop on a horse and carriage and tour the town in style. These rides leave from the Prince of Wales hotel situated in the heart of town.

To learn more about the town, take a guided tour that will show you round Fort George on the east side. For the modest fee you’ll get to hear from a local guide dressed in traditional costume talking about the town’s history. It was here in the war of 1812 where the British and Canadians fought against the US, so this place has a fascinating heritage.

The town is also home to the Shaw Festival, named after the legendary Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. It has been held here – and has drawn big crowds – every summer since 1962. If you want to join the crowds, make sure you take in a show if you are here between April and October.

Situated in Ontario on the Canadian side of the river and about 30 minutes by car to the north of Niagara Falls, you can reach Niagara-on-the-Lake by following the Niagara River Parkway and Queen’s Parade.
