TINY HOME No.1 Railway Carriage with Stunning Views
About this space At the end of a wooded lane through a farm gate are two converted 1930s cargo rail carriages. Recovered from the NE Railway they retain many original features while transforming these relics into cosy tiny houses. Carriage No. 1 is a light open-plan space with white washed tongue and groove walls and reclaimed school gym flooring. The double-glazed doors open onto a little private garden and the meadow with stunning views across woodland and the National Trust Gibside Estate. The space Situated next to the family farmhouse the Carriage is one of five dwellings on a small 18th century farmstead overlooking the Column to Liberty and breathtaking views of the Derwent Valley and the National Trust Gibside Estate. The south-facing Carriage has a private garden with seating for dining, relaxing, bird watching and star gazing. From here you can wander through the garden gate into the meadow down to the River for some wild swimming, fishing or to explore the endless miles of walk and cycleways. It's furnished with a bespoke handcrafted daybed which converts to a full-double with comfy mattress & luxury topper, a dining table with stools, equipped kitchen and separate wet room and radiator heating. Wifi in Guest access The guests have access to their own private garden with outdoor seating. The garden gate gives access via foot directly into the meadow and beyond. Guest cars can be parked in the public area immediately outside of the main farm gate and guests can walk along the driveway to access the Carriage. Other things to note On fine days the chickens and ducks will be roaming and we have a friendly cat and cockerpoo. There are 3 bee hives located on the farm. A small well-behaved pet is welcome but please let us know if they intend to join you.

Had a lovely two nights here - so peaceful and away-from-it-all, in spite of being really easy to get to by public transport. Very cosy little cabin among the trees - thoroughly recommended.
The railway carriage was a lovely place for my dog and I to call home while we visited friends in Newcastle. Great walks on the doorstep and Newcastle is deceptively easy to get to.We visited the Column to Liberty at Gibside today that we could see from our window. Very well equipped for such a cosy space and the treats were much appreciated. Thank you
Very impressed with the overall. Location is great for bird watching and wildlife lovers. Lovely and warm. Great walks.
Just great to wake up to hills and trees and DONKEYS! Yes watch out for the donkeys. 😁
Only problem with the postcode mix up at the beginning.
All in all, great holiday.
Just a one night stopover for me and my dog on our way further north. Easily accessible a short distance off the A1, but seems worlds away in a peaceful woodland setting with great views and traffic -free doorstep access to disused railway path/cycle route, fields, river and woodland country park. Excellent for dogs! Carriage No. 1 is really lovely, with loads of character, thoughtfully designed in a simple rustic style and well kitted-out in a small but uncramped space, and with its own attractive garden area (not secured, so you do need to keep your dog controlled). Dog and I were very comfortable. Friendly local micropub (Railway Tavern) a 20 minute stroll away along the former railway line. Accommodation owner Deborah friendly and helpful, with prompt replies to messages, but otherwise left us to enjoy the peace and privacy.
Would happily return and would thoroughly recommend.
The host responded promptly to our messages, all instructions were clear and the home was warm for us on our arrival. The space was cleverly planned to have everything you need. The views were beautiful and we were lucky to have dry days to explore Gibside and the Derwent valley. Lovely peaceful location, amenities close at hand. Thoughtful supply of books to read and general information. Very cosy and a tonic for the soul as so restful.
Such a lovely place with it's own garden to explore. A surprise for my daughter and she loved it. Very quirky which we love and had everything we needed for a night away. We played with the games that were there and enjoyed a bit of a slow down time and the next day being in nature. We both definitely want to return for longer. Fantastic communication from owner and would recommend. Upgraded to carriage 2 from 1 so we had a little more room. The bed was super comfy and shower toilet facilities were clean and great. Thank you.
