New Vishwanatha Temple Tours and Activities

New Vishwanatha Temple featuring heritage architecture, a temple or place of worship and religious aspects

Spot interesting statues and artwork and relax amid pristine gardens at this serene temple, set within an attractive university campus.

Enjoy a moment of peace and serenity while sitting in the gardens of the New Vishwanath Temple. Check out an interesting collection of art, sculptures and scriptures. Built in the 1960s, the New Vishwanath Temple is a replica of Varanasi’s Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The new temple sits in the heart of the picturesque Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus. The temple celebrates Lord Shiva. Unlike many temples, it welcomes all visitors, regardless of religious faith.

A tree-lined path leads to the temple and offers uninterrupted views of its elegant architecture. Take time to admire the artistically designed balconies, pavilions and spires. Wander around the outside of the temple, where students, families and pilgrims sit in the shade of leafy gardens. Look for sculptures of animals such as a seated bull, crocodile, lion and pig.

Step inside to discover a sparkling and elegantly decorated hall flanked by rows of graceful pillars. Check out the religious paintings and the Hindu scriptures adorning the walls. Go to the upper floor to see an idol of Lord Shiva, which glistens in a marble room. Walk out onto the veranda of the upper floor to enjoy views over the surrounding gardens.

Located on the Banaras Hindu University campus, the New Vishwanath Temple is about a 20-minute drive from Varanasi’s city centre. Get here via tuk-tuk or taxi. Alternatively, catch a bus to the campus entrance and then walk for about 25 minutes.

While here, stroll around the campus grounds to see a slice of Varanasi’s university lifestyle. Watch students travelling between the grand campus buildings and sports teams playing games of cricket. Spot art and archaeology artifacts at the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum. Visit Malviya Bhavan, the former home of the university’s founder.

The New Vishwanath Temple is open daily and admission is free. Photography is prohibited inside the temple. The Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum is open from Monday to Friday and has an admission fee. Find more information about the temple and university campus on the university’s official website.
