About this property
Experience Peace And Tranquility At Charming Cottage In Small Fishing Community.
This home was created by my parents, she a keen gardener from England, he an educator and businessman who was raised in the community. They retired here and created a unique environment amid the rugged setting of an authentic fishing village. The home is surrounded by hand-planted trees and gardens, and it offers fabulous views of Old Bonaventure harbour and beautiful Trinity Bay. At the rear of the house a small waterfall flows into a stream which runs right under the house and through the front lawn, providing a most relaxing soundscape for restful nights of sleep and memorable afternoon naps. The two double bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, accommodate four adults. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen with double ovens, a five-ring stove top and a dishwasher, along with every imaginable utensil. There is a breakfast area positioned beneath a skylight, and a more formal dining table overlooking the harbour. The comfortable lounge area is especially cosy with plenty of seating. It also features an inviting Vermont Castings wood-burning stove with a supply of firewood. Wi-fi internet access reaches all parts of the house and property. For entertainment, there is a flatscreen TV with Bell satellite service. DVD and CD players are also provided, along with a Bluetooth speaker for iPhones, etc. A landline phone is provided, with Canada/US wide unlimited long distance calling. This helps offset the fact that, like most rural Newfoundland communities, Old Bonaventure is not serviced by any cell phone service provider. The secluded garden features a pond and a wide variety of plants that provide spectacular colour throughout the spring/summer/fall seasons. The harbourfacing side of the house has a deck (with a gas BBQ). On warm days, this is a perfect spot to enjoy sunsets, watch fishing boats come and go, and to see magnificent eagles soar overhead from their nearby nests. There is a glassroofed conservatory which is perfect for enjoying those cooler days and for stargazing at night. For the musically inclined, there is also a superb piano. For readers, there is a huge selection of books that cover every interest. Finally, there is an ample collection of board games and playing cards. This inviting home is the ideal retreat for a restful and restorative holiday. And when you are rested, numerous nearby attractions await to connect you with the beauty and fascinating history of this special part of Newfoundland. For instance, the film site of the acclaimed “Random Passage” series is just a five minute drive. (Just one of four films shot in this area in recent years.) Hiking trails take you to the resettled outports of Kerley’s Harbour and British Harbour. The Skerwink Trail, an essential experience for hikers with spectacular views, is just 30 minutes away. Boat excursions for whalewatching and for glimpsing historic and enigmatic resettled outports depart daily from New Bonaventure and Trinity. If that is not enough history to satisfy, the 500 year old town of Trinity is only 25 minutes away. Newfoundland is famous for it's music and storytelling and there are many local concerts and festivals. Please contact us if you would like information on any events that may be happening during your visit. The options are endless...and the comments of previous visitors speak for themselves! This is a holiday experience that you will want to share with others.

Beautiful house and grounds. We enjoyed exploring the surrounding area, berry picking, a boat ride, hiking and the local historic church. No shortage of books on the many bookshelves!
We were so pleased when we opened the door to our cottage, pictures were spot on. Windows all around fabulous views.Lovely little quiet cove, absolutely perfect.
Dawne was a lovely host. Greeted us at the premises and gave us a tour of her home. Simply striking unique features and she gave us a little history of her family. The views as we walked about were stunning. She had given us lots of warning regarding the roadway to the cottage, which we greatly appreciated.
Delightful, spacious house with every convenience. Lovely spot overlooking the harbor, beautiful gardens. Amazing kitchen, sun room and lots of books. We had perfect weather so no time to read. So much to do nearby!
Old Bonaventure House is a charming gem in the short term rental world. We used it as a base for exploring this region a Newfoundland and while it is perhaps a little isolated for some folks it was ideal for us. Our only regret was that we had not set up our trip to allow us time to relax here. It would be an ideal place to pursue creative endeavours. The house has old world charm complimented by all of the amenities one could ask for. Dawne was a warm and accommodating host. Thank you.
We stay here at least once a year, usually over the holidays, and it is an absolute treasure of a place. Dawne, the owner, keeps making thoughtful upgrades while keeping the soul of this wonderful spot. Just the best place to cook a good meal and curl up with a book.

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities
We loved this charming property and all the amenities the house afforded. Best beds ever!
Absolutely amazing place. If you like tranquility and peace, this is for you. The house is clean and spacious and the views are amazing. We watched two moose on the other side of the harbour for a couple of hours one evening. We also watched fishermen bringing in their catch and loading them for market. 5 STARS!!
Dawne’s home is beyond description. Bookshelves line the walls in every room, windows encompass the living room with views of the Old Bonaventure Bay; there’s a lovely wrap around porch and a warm sun room…it’s impossible to choose a favorite spot. The kitchen is fully stocked and large enough for everyone to get in to help with supper. The garden is unbelievable, too. Every time you find a treasure, there are ten more to discover here.
Home was lovely. We shared with another couple and we happy with the separate bathrooms and comfortable beds. Host met us personally and showed us around. She left us local treats and soaps. Great experience.
We loved sitting back and relaxing while watching fishing boats in the harbour. The kitchen was well stocked and very convenient. We had lots of room. We had the village mascot Chisholm visit us everyday looking for some social time. He even came to say goodbye the day we left. We spent a few days touring the area such as Trinity and Bonavista. We enjoyed our stay.
The pictures are great and accurate but they don't do this home justice. The house itself is warm and inviting and Dawne couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming with some great ideas for day trips, including Two Whales Cafe, Port Rexton Brewery, Skerwink Trail, Eco Tours Whale Watching. Kitchen is very large and a treat to work in.

This place is indeed charming and more. The house is nestled into a hillside, surrounded by gardens and mature trees. And yet, the many windows in the expansive sunroom/ family room offer an amazing view of the litlle harbour and open water. We watched the fishing boats go in and out the harbour throughout the day and would walk down to the dock to visit and watch them work. What a Newfoundland experience! This house had everything we needed,; a well equipped kitchen, hundreds of books to pursue, and a beautiful piano with music books. We met the lovely neighbors, and were given some fresh cods from the lady down the road. This is a " must return" place for me in Newfoundland. Thanks Dawne.
This rustic house is located in a tiny outport with a beautiful view of the small fishing port of Old Bonaventure. Close proximity to hiking at the Random Passage Site and to the historic town of Trinity where there is an amazing communityTheatre that keeps the history of the area alive.
Also about 35 minute drive to the beautiful Skerwink and Fox Island Trails. Road in has incredible vistas but is not for the faint of heart although we did get used to it. Loved the whole area.
My husband and I recently stayed at Dawne's cottage in Old Bonaventure for 2 nights. We absolutely would have loved to have stayed longer. The cottage is really comfortable and cozy. Lots of areas to relax in. Clean, spacious. It has everything you need for an extended stay. Comfortable bed, nice towels. Nice touch to leave local teas and coffee beans for our use, as well as the chocolates! Old Bonaventure is quite out of the way, however, the drive in is very scenic, and with the cottage overlooking the small fishing village, it really exposes you to local life in NL. Trinity is a short drive away, and there are endless other sites in the Bona Vista peninsula to occupy your time while in the area. Wish we would have built in more time to just enjoy our surroundings and the cottage itself. Would recommend to others.
I had been looking at the Old Bonaventure house to host fiends from away who visited over the summer, but it was booked full. When my husband and I decided on a rather last minute getaway before the winter has us holed up in St. John's, we were so pleased that the house was available. A friend joined us for two of the four nights we were there. She worked on a music/art project, while my husband, dog and I cooked and did a little hiking. The wonderful kitchen, wood stove, openness, windows (!!), bath, cozy rooms, and waterfall did not disappoint. We really appreciate how welcome Dawne made us, and, importantly, our dog, feel! I would definitely come back, and the stay convinced me that a winter getaway is would be lovely.
Very big place, maybe 2000 square feet, very comfortable, everything we needed.
So many interesting treasures to look at, many books. Lovely harbor. Old house but both bathrooms have been modernized. Comfortable beds.
Loved the wood burner!
Beautiful piano, like new! Solarium.
Last few kilometers to get there were quite poor, lots of potholes. Drive carefully.
Close to Random Passage.
Host was very nice and helpful.
The pictures don't do the house justice. The town is the fishing village we had hoped for. Everything was great from the water pressure to the very comfortable beds. There are so many windows it only takes a few minutes to cool the place in the evening. Every window has a view, garden or ocean. There are so many interesting things to look at in the house decor with a huge selection of books to flip through. Dawn gave us a tour of the house then arranged for us to get lobster from a local who then took us out in the bay on their boat and we toured the area and a cave you wouldn't know was there. it was one of the highlights of our trip. It was our favourite rental in our trip. Loved everything about it. If you leave quietly in the morning you often find a bunny in the front yard.
other reviews comment on the road being bumpy whcih it is for about 5 mins. not difficult to navigate.
We also recommend taking a tour with Sea of Whales. it was outstanding.
