Visit this exclusive island paradise for idyllic beaches and mangrove walks, as well as a taste of high-society.
Located in the sheltered cove of Biscayne Bay southeast of Miami, Key Biscayne is a beautiful island retreat, known for its exclusive residential properties. Here you’ll find a number of attractions including the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and wildlife reserve, as well as picture-perfect white sand beaches perfect for surfing and swimming.
Once the largest coconut plantation in North America, this 11 kilometre long island is now one of the most sought-after addresses in Miami. Celebrity residents past and present include film actors Brad Pitt and Andy Garcia, as well as world-famous singer Cher. Head to one of the many cafés and restaurants, and you might just spot a face you recognise.
The island has also witnessed famous events in recent American history. President Richard Nixon owned a cluster of properties on the waterfront, which came to be known as the Florida White House. It was here that key discussions about the Watergate break-in took place, and it served as a retreat for Nixon as the scandal unfolded.
In spite of construction and development, as well as being hit by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the island’s natural beauty remains. In fact the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park was greatly improved after the eye of the storm wiped out the non-native flora, enabling the replanting of indigenous plants and trees to create a showcase natural environment. Wander along the mangrove boardwalk, or hire a bike or kayak to explore further afield. If you prefer, rent a beach chair and parasol to relax and enjoy the sea breeze.
For panoramic views from the southern tip of the Island, climb the 109 steps of the Cape Florida Lighthouse. This 20-metre high landmark is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. It was rebuilt in 1846 following an attack by native tribes. It also makes a perfect backdrop for your holiday photos!
Key Biscayne is approximately 18 kilometres from downtown Miami and is connected to the mainland by the Rickenbacker Causeway. The Metrobus route runs from downtown to the island.
