This gorgeous mountain is visible from all over town. Journey to its peak to enjoy spectacular views of Bogotá and the surrounding area.

From most places in central Bogotá, you can look up and see the dreamy mountain of Monserrate looming tall over the city. This lovely natural feature provides a dramatic backdrop to many of the landmarks in town. Travel to the top to enjoy uninterrupted city views, to encounter native flora and fauna, and to visit the quaint historic church at its peak.

Choose your path up the 3,152 metre (10,341-foot) mountain to the attractions at its peak. The much-loved funicular train offers continuous views of the mountain’s plant life through its transparent glass roof. Ride the gondola to see panoramic aerial vistas while the cityspace of Bogotá shrinks into a dot on the landscape. If you are feeling energetic, take the 1-hour trek to the top along marked trails that snake through the forest.

Monserrate is gifted with a rich natural ecosystem, where bountiful flora provides a welcoming habitat for a range of mammal and bird species. Look out for foxes and weasels.

Once you have reached the summit, take some time to enjoy the view from the observation deck. Try to make out landmarks in the city below, including the Plaza de Toros de Santamaría (Santamaría Bullring) and Guadalupe Hill.

Head to the Sanctuary of Monserrate, a quaint whitewashed church that dates back to the 17th century. The church, as the mountain, takes its name from the Montserrat mountain near Barcelona in Spain. Don’t miss the statue of El Señor Caido (Fallen Lord), which is a popular destination for pilgrimages.

Monserrate is located in the northeastern section of central Bogotá. It is easily accessible by public bus or subway, and a hop-on, hop-off tourist bus will deliver you right to the starting points for the gondola and funicular train. The mountain is open to visitors every day, although on Sundays it is particularly crowded on account of visiting pilgrims. Check the official website for information about operating hours for the funicular train, gondola and walking trail.
