The idea for the Liberty Memorial was conceived in 1919, when the horrors of the First World War were still fresh in the minds of those who lived through it, and within just ten days the necessary funds had been raised. The memorial was visited by over 150,000 people at its official opening in 1926 – an indication of the public support for this moving and inspiring project. Subsequent restoration and expansion has added an exhibition centre which enhances the experience for today’s visitors. Most people take time to absorb the magnitude of the memorial itself before making their way to the National World War I Museum at its foot. The exhibition is not limited only to the role played by America in the Great War, instead offering an informative overview of the global conflict and helping to place the American involvement in its wider context. This approach has been widely praised for its accessibility to visitors from all over the world. As well as chronicling the major campaigns of the war, the museum commemorates those caught up in the action, with displays of personal possessions and other artefacts providing a moving insight into life on the front line. Official documents and letters bring complex political issues vividly to life, while a magnificent collection of military vehicles introduces some of the contemporary hardware used in daily combat.Multimedia displays including life-size trenches, a bomb crater and a wrecked tank are specially designed to enhance the immersive experience. Audio guides take you to the heart of the conflict with informative commentary on the various exhibits. Once you’ve completed the tour, climb to the top of the memorial itself to contemplate the perils of war while enjoying peaceful views of the grounds and the distant city. The Liberty Memorial is off Main Street, opposite the Crown Center. The price of admission covers a two-day pass. The museum is open every day except Monday and there is free on-site parking.
