In the middle of a pulsating metropolis you’ll love the refuge provided by Hong Kong Park. This sprawling green space is a landscaped garden in central Hong Kong that offers unparalleled views of the towers above you. Stroll around its koi ponds or sign up for a tai chi class surrounded by the historic remnants of the past.
Since 1991, the former site of Victoria Barracks has grown to be one of the most popular parks in the city. Visit Hong King Park to see the barracks, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Pass by the Cassels Block, once a grand residence for military officers, to discover local culture at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. Wander around the British period building and you’ll see artists working and contemporary and modern sculptures, paintings and sketches. Continue exploring the park to reach Rawlinson House, Wavell House and the home of the beautiful Museum of Tea Ware, the Flagstaff House.
Once you’ve learnt about the historic architecture in Hong Kong Park, make your way to the Edward Youde aviary. The gigantic enclosure is home to approximately 800 birds and the high ceilings and elevated walkways mean you have a great chance of seeing the birds in full flight. See rare Asian species of bird up close in the nearby enclosures. There are a vast number of tree species located within the park, including fig, candlenut and kapok trees.
Practise your tai chi in the grassy area next to the aviary. The Tai Chi garden is a space dedicated to the ancient Chinese martial art and a great place to bend and stretch with the locals. Walk around the central pond to spot brightly coloured fish and a cascading fountain at the nearby Fountain Plaza. Stop for lunch at the park’s restaurant before you admire the scenery of the Forsgate Conservatory.
Hong Kong Park is open daily and can be reached by bus or metro. Entry is free.
