Hong Kong’s original man-made beach offers great bathing, family-friendly facilities and some interesting shopping options.
Covering an area of 78.5 hectares, Golden Beach is the largest in Tuen Mun in the New Territories region, and is one of the most popular destinations for families, swimmers and sun-seekers, thanks to its excellent water quality, golden sands and top-class facilities. The 545-metre strip was the first man-made beach in Hong Kong, and the fine, soft sand which gives it its enticing name was actually imported from China. On-site facilities include showers, toilets and changing cubicles, making an impromptu visit all the more tempting. Families with youngsters or inexperienced swimmers in tow will be reassured by the year-round presence of trained lifeguards. Clean water makes a cooling swim a must, before stretching out on the sand to soak up the rays. When the sun gets too hot, head for a shady bench and watch the ships as they pass to and fro across the picturesque backdrop of Lantau Island in the distance. Then treat yourself to a snack from one of the beachside kiosks or take a stroll along the tree-lined promenade to view the golden statues in Dolphin Square. The subtropical climate of Hong Kong means that its beaches keep busy year-round, and Golden Beach is no exception. It is part of the Gold Coast resort, which boasts its own lively marina club and shopping mall. Weekends and public holidays are especially popular, when the Montmartre art fair sets up over 80 stalls selling local art and crafts, ornaments, artefacts and other goodies – you can even try your own hand in one of the workshops that are arranged to complement the fair.Golden Beach is located at the 18.5 kilometre milestone of Castle Peak Road, and is easily accessible by bus. Summers can be hot and crowded, so if you prefer your beach life a little milder and quieter, choose the cooler months of September to January. The typhoon season runs from May to November.
