From the friendly greeting at reception to the clean room my stay here was excellent. I have just spent a couple of months exploring NZ and this is my favourite motel!
We loved our stay here in a beautiful location, friendly hosts, beautiful clean room, right next to a restaurant with a big screen or could watch sky in our room. Lovely.
There was a bit of miscommunication of duties of the new cleaner so didn’t get our beds made or towels renewed for the first two days. Very apologetic front of house and rectified towels. Otherwise comfortable stay.

Better than the VaxPass asking place down the Rd
At least Ocean Beach motel are friendly and welcoming and arent still asking for Covd Vax Passes like their nearest competitor....
Clean tidy & friendly place. Bed comfort was a 6/10 and the walls are rather sound conductive. Wd stay again though :)
A well presented property which had privacy and good parking.
Only negative is the shower which should have a curtain to prevent water splashing all over the bathroom which is also used for dressing due to the only mirror being in the bathroom.
Nice and clean room. Private porch in the back for the morning coffee or evening wine. 3 minutes walk to the beach to see the sunrise (weather permitting). Pizza trailer arrives at around 5 pm. We were pleased with everything except the heating that was blowing directly on the bed. A bit uncomfortable.
The property was under refurbishment or something as there was scaffolding all over the place, however the apartment we stayed in was lovely and clean and tidy. There was plenty of space for our family with a fully equipped kitchen and lounge area to relax. The beds however were uncomfortable and there weren’t enough pillows which was definitely a downside for us.
Not impressed, after a long trip we just wanted to take a nap. No aircon, there’s a ceiling fan that helps a little. Carpets smelled like wet dog. A lot of flies. Room was very outdated. Cups and glasses were dirty. Really did not enjoy this stay, quite expensive for Gisborne. Floors were sticky and very dangerous to shower as it’s very slippery. Price is - $60 more than other properties in the area and in my opinion not worth it, the property needs a lot of TLC.
Nice large unit but cold, only heating was a small oil heater and fan heater in one bedroom. We got up to a warmer main room. The blinds did not fully shut in the bedrooms. Other than that nicely set up.
The location outside of Gisborne on the way to the coast, next to the beach was idyllic. Okitu Store is in walking distance for everyday amenities. The Wifi was spotty. There was a lack of information regarding the power saving features attached to the key. Which made resting and low key touring ideal. Great for recuperation - not great if you want to do some online work.
Hicks Bay Motor Lodge: We arrived to a lovely welcoming greeting from the 2 owners of this well appointed Motor Lodge. Room 10 appeared to be great, all clean and well maintained etc. But we soon discovered it was extremely noisy at night, with light flashing as cars on the main road passed by. We were told in the morning by lovely owner that this is usually the last room they let out as it is the noisiest - I had booked months prior, but of course Expedia had only booked it the week before! Hence we ended up with the worst room in the best motel! The location is great with just a short walk down to the beach. Would recommend coming here, but definitely not to room 10!
