Galleria Umberto I

This 19th century shopping arcade boasts cafés, fashion boutiques and one of the country's finest interiors.

One of Naples' outstanding public spaces, Galleria Umberto I is alive with tourists, office workers and chic students as they pass through the arcade or stop for ice cream and coffee in one of the numerous eateries.

Named after King Umberto I, this shopping arcade was built during his reign in 1891. It is known mainly for its stunning architecture. It also provided the inspiration for Naples’ extensive rebuilding programme following the Second World War when it tried to emulate its spacious and elaborate design detail. It is situated opposite the San Carlo Theatre.

Once inside, you will be amazed by how spacious it feels and the effect the vaulted ceiling has on the light coming into the building. The ceiling is suspended some 56 metres above the ground by a series of 16 iron ribs that hold it in place. The upper floors feature symmetrical arches which add to the sense of grandeur. Look down and you will see the most incredible mosaic depicting the zodiac, spanning out from the middle point of the gallery.

The lower floors boast an impressive selection of boutiques, cafés and restaurants. You can choose to go on a hunt for fashion gems or simply relax in a traditional Neapolitan café with a coffee or maybe a pizza. This is the perfect way to sit back and take in the scene or imagine yourself here at the turn of the 20th century when the place would have been teeming with businessmen and local traders.

The central area of the gallery is spacious enough to host the concerts, art exhibitions and fashion shows that take place here on a regular basis. If you get the opportunity, don't miss the chance to see this magnificent space transformed into a stunning performance venue.

Situated in the east of the city, a few streets away from the port on Via San Carlo, Galleria Umberto I is served by local buses as well as the Azienda Napoletana Mobilità. The gallery is open daily with cafés and restaurants remaining open into the evening.
