Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you've prepared well. We've made a list of handy travel tips that will get your Poland holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• It's simple — first, pack in your passport, travel docs, wallet and medications. Next, you'll need some in-flight entertainment to help pass the time. A thrilling book and a tablet crammed with your favourite movies are some terrific options. If you plan to catch forty winks, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also be useful. Finally, squeeze in a toothbrush and some deodorant so you'll hop off the plane feeling fresh and ready to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and fireworks, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane aren't the place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfortable clothing and opt for shoes that are enclosed, flat and easy to slip on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to inactivity and poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.

It's all about being prepared. We've compiled some handy tips and tricks for an easy trip through airport security. Watch out Poland, here you come:

• Your travel ID and boarding pass will need to be shown to airport security personnel. Keep them at hand so you don't hold up the line.
• After that, both you and your carry-on luggage must be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings such as your belt, jacket and earphones need to go through the machine.
• For just a few minutes, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, tablet and any other electronic gadgets will also need to go through the scanner.
• Want to bring along your favourite hand cream? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, it's OK to bring with you in your carry-on baggage.
• There's a possibility that you'll be required to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a good idea.
• Sharp items like knives are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked baggage.
