No matter where you're coming from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you're well prepared. We've put together a list of handy tips and tricks that will get your Cairo holiday started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• First things first, pack in your passport, official ID, cash and daily medications. Next, you'll want some extra in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy book and a tablet crammed with your favourite shows are good options. If you intend to catch up on some sleep, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, leave some space for a few toiletry items to ensure you touchdown feeling fresh and ready to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your beloved Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, flares and fireworks, are also restricted.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your top priority is to be as comfortable as you can. Opt for shoes that are easy to pull on and off, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to bring a sweater in case it gets cold in the cabin.
• You're probably aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To reduce your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks or tights and move your legs and feet often.

• Be sure to have your travel documents and passport easily accessible. They'll be the first things you'll be asked to present to security.
• After that, both you and your carry-on bag will be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that might set the alarms off. Items like your jacket, belt and headphones need to go through the machine.
• All your electronics, including your laptop and phone, must also be scanned.
• Any liquids or gels, such as hair oil or hand cream, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• There's a possibility that you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Sharp items are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them safely away in your checked luggage.
