Visitors of all ages will love this fascinating museum full of engaging exhibits and home to the largest cinema screen in Atlanta.

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is packed full of fascinating exhibits, exploring the mysteries of the world around us. Witness a battle between the largest dinosaurs that ever walked the earth, walk through a virtual waterfall, explore the constellations in the night sky or tackle questions of human culture and identity. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled as you walk through the museum: each of the 40,000 limestone tiles covering the floor contains a fossil.

As you walk through the main entrance you’ll find yourself in prehistoric Patagonia, staring up at the majestic skeleton of an Argentinosaurus, the largest dinosaur ever discovered. This creature would have measured over 37 metres in length and weighed over 100 tonnes. A Gigantosaurus skeleton, complete with 20-centimetre razor-sharp teeth, is poised to attack, while flocks of Anhanguera and Pterodaustro appear to circle above.

Learn about the earth’s development through the history of the local region when you explore the museum’s signature exhibition: A Walk Through Time in Georgia. The story begins with the Piedmont, home to the oldest rocks and geological formations, and ends with the Coast and Barrier Islands, an ever-changing environment, thanks to the effect of the rivers and the sea.

Younger visitors will love the Fernbank NatureQuest, a specially designed interactive exhibition that will bring out their inner explorer. Climb through the insides of a giant red oak tree, make your way though a waterfall hologram and discover fascinating live animal exhibits.

Finish your visit with a captivating documentary at the IMAX Theater. Take a seat in the 315-seat auditorium, and enjoy the immersive experience provided by the giant screen, measuring five storeys high and complemented with stunning surround sound. You may be taken on a thrilling journey below the waves, or find yourself spirited back to the ice age. Visit the museum’s website to find out what the latest adventure will be.

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is open daily. Tickets can be purchased in advance via the website, or in person at the box office. Free parking is available on-site, but spaces fill up quickly at the weekends. Alternatively, you can travel by MARTA bus.
