"Hotel was a little worn in places but very clean and comfortable. Staff were very helpful. Room was clean and comfortable. Restaurant food was delicious. Easy to get to city centre by bus. Because it was beside the zoo, there were lots of exuberant children so there were times it was noisy in the halls. Not so great for a senior looking for some quiet time."
Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh by The Unlimited Collection
8/10 Good
"Very centrally located. Right in the middle of it all. Longest walk was to Holyrood, 18 mins. Edinburgh castle was 12 mins. Right across from the Scott Monument. Waverly Starion is a 2 mins walk and you can get anywhere from there. Hotel was quiet, restaurant was good. Friendly staff. If you love tea, they have a tea menu at the restaurant. Recommend trying just for the experience."
"The first thing you should know is there are 2 Ibis hotels one street away from each other. That caused me confusion throughout my trip when calling Ubers or taxis. The location is excellent, within walking distance to many attractions, restaurants and shops in the old part of the city. It is within walking distance from the train station however if it's raining or you have a lot of luggage, it is a tough walk. I would recommend an Uber or taxi. The front desk staff is on duty 24 hours a day and they were helpful in getting an early check in and calling taxis for me. The lobby is very small but functional. I had a twin room as I was traveling with a friend. The room is small and the bathroom is the size of a phone booth, but there were areas for storage and a full length mirror in the room. The room had a hair dryer but no electrical outlet that I could see in the bathroom. But their was an outlet near the full length mirror so it was manageable. There is a coffee shop with muffins, croissants, pastries right next door which was convenient."
"The hotel is on a flat part of Grassmarket. The Saturday outdoor market is right across the street, as is the hop- hop-off bus and at least 6 pubs and some simple eateries. Victoria street is a 3 min. walk. I loved the location. The hotel is well maintained and you can get lots of towels or tea from the cleaning staff, who are always around. If you want the hotel pub or pool, you’d have to go to the sister Apex hotel. I liked the quietness of this one. Only problem is the corridors and rooms were too hot for my liking(went in autumn)."
"The Apex Waterloo is conveniently located to many of Edinburgh’s attractions. It’s an easy walk to Weaverly Station. Close to Princes Street Gardens. If you forgot anything there’s a mall right behind the hotel and the shops on Princes Street is an easy walk.
Easy access to the Royal Mile. It’s my second time to base my Edinburgh trip from this hotel. I’ll use it for future trips too."

They also boast local pubs and eateries where you can enjoy a pint and a meal without breaking the bank, and regular bus services connect them to Edinburgh for broader exploration.

For solo travellers, visiting in spring or autumn means you can enjoy the Scottish countryside with fewer crowds and more competitive rates on guesthouses and B&Bs in nearby towns like Linlithgow or Livingston. Public transport options, like local buses, remain consistent year-round, offering an inexpensive way to explore the area.
Winter also presents a budget-friendly opportunity, especially for couples looking for a quieter, more intimate escape. Many local attractions, such as the historic sites around Linlithgow Palace, are less crowded, and some may offer reduced off-season entry fees.

The park features diverse wildlife, bridges, and even some historic ruins, offering plenty to see and photograph.
History buffs can explore the external grounds of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
