The home of the Swedish royal familyfeatures a beautiful Baroque garden and a program of events hosted within an18th-century theatre.

Explore the reception halls, manicured gardens and historic theatres ofSweden’s royal residence. Drottningholm Palace dates back to the 1600s and isthe architectural marvel of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. It has been thepermanent home of the Swedish royal family since 1981 and a World Heritage Sitesince 1991.

Enter the palace and you’ll be met by the ornate decorations that adornthe walls. Important works of art and historic furniture from the 17th and 18thcenturies can be found in many of the rooms. Climb the staircase designed bythe lauded Italian artist, Giovanni Carvoe, to reach a bedroom once belongingto Queen Hedvig Eleonora. A Chinese Salon features oriental decorations chosenby King Gustav III.

Make your way through the spacious palace grounds to experience the tranquillityof the baroque garden. The gardens are bordered by lime trees and feature animpressive Hercules Fountain by Adriaen de Vries, a Dutch sculptor from the1600s. Stroll through the walkways, ponds and bridges of the English garden andkeep your eyes peeled for the Italian marble statues purchased by the Kingduring the 18th century.

Visit the Slottsteater, a royal theatre dating back to the 18th century.Explore areas usually reserved for performers on a guided tour before sittingback for an evening of exquisite opera. A schedule of performances can beviewed on the official website. Learn about the connection between Asia andEurope in the 18th century by seeing the art within the Chinese Pavilion. Nextto the pavilion you’ll find the former studio of Evert Lundquist, featuringmany of his oil and charcoal pieces.

Drottningholm Palace is located approximately 20 minutes west ofStockholm by car, and free parking is available upon arrival. A bus servicesthe palace along with a ferry service in the summer. Drottningholm Palace isopen daily between May and September but reduces its hours during the wintermonths. A full schedule of open days can be found on the website.
