Admire the work of regional artists at the Culture House of Brazil Poets (Casa de Cultura Poeta Brasil dos Reis). Attend concerts, dance shows, lectures and seminars. Set inside a townhouse erected in 1824, the Culture House of Brazil Poets is one of the oldest Casa de Cultura (House of Culture) in the state of Río de Janeiro.
Before its inauguration in 1986, the attraction witnessed an interesting history. It started life as a privately owned artist and poet’s club. The upper floor was the club’s social meeting room while the lower floor housed a bar and café. A hotel chain purchased the building when the club changed location. Artists protested at a planned redevelopment and the house subsequently became a protected heritage landmark.
The exhibitions rotate throughout the year and often cover themes related to Angra dos Reis. See paintings that portray the city’s beaches, coastline and archipelago of over 300 islands. Browse expositions of decorative arts, handicrafts and furniture pieces, many inspired by the sublime coastal surroundings. Photography displays are also common.
Ask about current events such as children’s theater classes and music lessons. Previous activities include a handicraft market and live music performances on the street outside the building.
The cultural center sits in the heart of Angra dos Reis’ commercial center. The port and tourist pier are both a short walk to the south while the city’s bus terminal is 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) to the east.
You’ll find plenty of other major attractions near the venue. Among these is Angra dos Reis City Hall, Carmo Convent and the Fish Market. The closest beach is Anil Beach, which is guarded by delicately carved statues of the Three Wise Men.
The Culture House of Brazil Poets is open daily and admission is free. Expect shorter opening hours on public holidays.
