  • The Dock Street Theatre is Charleston's last surviving hotel from the antebellum period. The silhouette of its wrought iron balcony against the spire of St. Philip's church may be the single most photographed spot in the city. The main portion of the building was constructed around 1809 as Planter's Hotel. The hotel was built by Alexander Calder and his wife, who did so by renovating several pre-existing buildings at the site. The main entrance may not have been built until 1855 by J.W. Gamble.

The hotel was used extensively by planters from the midlands of South Carolina, who traveled to Charleston during horse-racing season. It was noted for its wonderful food and drinks during this era, and the South's famous Planter's Punch may have originated here. Guests to the hotel passed through the recessed porch with brownstone columns, into the lobby, and up a grand staircase that ascended to a drawing room. While much of the interior has been altered, these elements of the antebellum hotel remain and were adapted in subsequent uses of the building. A series of additions to the hotel throughout the 19th and 20th centuries can be easily identified by differences in brick coloration.

This theater is said to have been the first building built specifically for theatrical performances in America. Planter's Hotel occasionally housed one of the city's theatrical troupes, which performed at the nearby New Theatre during the mid-19th century. The most notable actor of this troupe was Junius Brutus Booth. Booth was the patriarch of an outstanding family of actors, which included John Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin. Junius Booth, who stayed at the Planter's Hotel, allegedly tried to kill his manager here in 1838. Today the Dock Street Theatre is home to the Charleston Stage Company, South Carolina's largest professional theater production company, and houses the city's Cultural Affairs office as well as The City Gallery, an exhibition space for local artists.

Location was amazing - traveled with my parents who are in their late 70s-early 80s and it was great being so close to the market and tons of great restaurants! Being across the street from Target was also helpful. Stay Duvet was super responsive via VRBO messages and texts, and it made our stay very easy. The apartment was perfect for our group and had all the amenities we needed in the kitchenette - the ice maker was a great touch! Would definitely recommend and stay again with a group.

Quick Weekend in Charleston

Location is amazing! Located in on King Street across from Louis Vuitton. It is the best shopping right out of the front door. The space was great for the 3 of us and we were not on top of each other. The bedrooms were a nice size too. There’s a kitchenette so we could bring home take out. So many restaurants all close by. We could walk everywhere. Loved it!

Great spot for the family

Great central location for all things downtown Charleston. I'd highly recommend this location if you want to be central and within walking distance to many amazing places. The rooms were great and perfect for my family of 4 (Wife, and 2 daughers (15 & 23)). Highly recommend and would stay here again.

Great location in downtown Charleston. Close to all shopping and dinning. Owner was very responsive when needed. Only downside is there is only one free parking space for the rental. Would stay again for sure.

Stayed here this past weekend with a group of 6. It was a great location! Everything was perfect easy to check in and leave. All the restaurants and bars were close by. Had a reserved parking spot and also a restaurant to grab a bite from downstairs!

What a wonderful space in a equally wonderful city! While planning a destination wedding we were able to enjoy the full experience of the downtown and the VRBO was fantastic. Beautifully decorated and comfortable. The only comment would be we wished there was better lighting on the stairway for evening returns. Would stay there again

If you want on King St in the middle of downtown this is the place. Easy parking. Check-in was at four, but we were pleasantly surprised that we were texted at noon saying the apartment was available. The owner is also accommodated a late check out on short notice due to a change in our plans. We very much appreciated the owners flexibility. The beds were extremely comfortable. The apartment was very clean. The AC worked amazing and was actually chilly at times :-) I would highly recommend this place.

Good place to take a break and sleep if you are planning on being out and about a lot. Parking is around the back of the building and a good little walk to get to the entrance. Lots of steps to get up to the actual apartment.

Simple Chic

We were so pleased with the location , cleanliness, decor, comfort, and safety wefelt while staying here. Everything was around us we haD peace of mind knowing that we were safe and in a very Happening spot. Everything was the way the pictures showed and even better. the children absolutely loved it and the teenagers love to take can go downstairs and walk around safely and be close to where we are staying. I would recommend this location and I would even stay here again
