HOW THINGS WORK
WATER
1/ ONLY DRINK WATER FROM INDOOR CONTAINERS (not taps which is well-water).
2/ All other water (shower, tap, containers) is from our well

SOLAR POWER (shouldn’t need to do anything, just use it)
1/ LOG control panel in cupboard - no need to do anything unless it is not working). When out of power, it beeps. Turn it off. Needs sunlight to re-charge. Level of how charged it is can be seen on monitor (see instructions in cupboard). Text Jane for help.

OUTDOOR SHOWER We now have hot water but we will miss the screaming.

RECYCLING + GARBAGE
All cabins either have their own bins or can use bins beside Log
ZERO-WASTE is a goal. Try to avoid too much packaging. No composting solutions yet because of animals so please burn compost or put in garbage, or use a pot to gather and take home. Any suggestions for improvement welcome.

DOGS  Use towels to keep furniture clean (we have extras in wooden cupboard in log cabin). Guide your dog in treating our fellow creatures with respect. DE-SKUNKER in tool shed. Please clean up poop before you leave best poss. There is a porcupine that sometimes wanders by at dusk, so we usually leash dogs around then.

COOKING: TWO -BURNER PROPANE STOVETOP  Use like a normal stove but know these are much more fragile - you'll see the metal turn red hot. Be very careful.

GARDEN Many a wonderful meal has been made here in our simple cabins.please use herbs and vegetables freely! watering cans are beside garden if it looks dry.

FOREST  Path to forest is behind Expedition Hut. If you ever get lost in forest just follow the sound of water and you’ll reach civilization. Unless there’s no wind, of course. You’re never far.  We don’t have formal trails, we love the mystery of the deer trails. You see much more.

SWIMMING Our shoreline is beautiful limestone plains and some bouldered areas. You can go straight out from the shore where it is flat. We keep a bristle broom there to create a safe path out. It is worth it - the water is beautiful. Families sometimes spend the whole day in water. You can also swim from the point - get into deep water faster. Feel the water come from three directions at the tip! VERY SLIPPERY SHORELINE!!! wear water shoes but still be VERY careful! ALTERNATIVELY There is a wonderful sandy beach (public) in nearby Providence Bay which you can walk, bike or drive to.

WOODSTOVE ASHES - they’ll be emptied when you leave. but If ashes need cleaning out, use ashbucket by woodstove and dump behind outhouse. Dowse well. MAKE SURE no embers!

FIREPITS These should only be used when no wind at all and never left alone! Dowse with bucket of water after. Use ‘campfire wood’ that is outside near main firepit rather than wood in woodshed if you can. Woodshed wood is best for inside use as it is hardwood and no sap to start chimney fires. Campfires are great to burning up scrap wood, sappy wood, brush excess

PARKING We suggest parking away from cabins so views remains chrome-free.

NO SMOKING! Prefer none, but outdoors only if you do. Please put butts in a jar. Butt-leavers will find themselves without one.

OUTDOOR TOILETS  Each cabin has their own. ‘En-suite’ so-to-speak or should we say ‘out-suite’. They are pumped out regularly. If you would like an extra pump-out, let us know.

BUGS  We are blessed with soft winds most of the time which keeps things cool and the bugs down. However, avoid leaving unscreened doors open for both insects (and mice in autumn).

IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS WORKING WHEREVER YOU ARE
You are always welcome to work in garden, water, weed, chop or, collect kindling, etc.

VIP - USE OF WOODSTOVES
(chimney fires are a real thing!)

WATCH TEMPERATURE MONITOR that is on stove pipe. Keep temp in ‘safe’ range.
DON’T OVERSTUFF! They throw off a lot of heat with just a small amount of wood. watch the hand fire temperature gauge on the thermostat that is on chimney pipe

HOW TO USE DAMPERuse to control strength of oxygen to fire rather than adding a lot of wood. PUSH IN to make fire stronger (adds more oxygen)PULL OUT to slow down fire. AT NIGHT: Good to slow down fire (PULL OUT DAMPER) so fire lasts until morning.
WOOD TO USE:WOODSTOVE: USE THE GOOD WOOD IN WOODSHED -hardwood for the most part. You don’t want to use sappy wood as it builds up dangerous creosote.

FIREPITS: use more ‘sappy’ wood that is outside around main firepit. (spruce/cedar - not the heavy wood that is in woodshed if possible)

IF …

IF YOU RUN OUT OF WATER FOR SHOWER or SINK IN LOG or CONTAINERS
- use pump in pumphouse by log. easy to start, instructions beside pump - just open lever for whichever hose you wantBLACK HOSE - for FILLING MAIN TANK (full when water splashes out over top of shower)
GREEN HOSE - to fill buckets - undo green hose (which goes to HEX), open lever, fill containers

IF YOU RUN OUT OF PROPANE FOR STOVE
When you run out of propane it just stops working - when you run out (doubtful) you’ll need to just switch tank to full one. (Spare on porch with bbq or in toolshed behind EXP HUT)

IF YOU RUN OUT OF SOLAR ELECTRICITY
if days are too cloudy or use too great you may run out. TURN ‘OFF’ on panel to stop beeping. We have a generator which can charge batteries if really necessary. Text Jane.
