Evening in Lima

This immense colonial basilica was designed by Francisco Pizarro, the infamous Spanish conquistador that founded the city of Lima.

Long before you visit the Cathedral of Lima, you will have seen it in the skyline of the city. This vast, imposing basilica has been part of the city ever since the Spanish conquests of the 16th century. It has seen a lot of history and history has left its mark on the cathedral in turn. Admire its magisterial design, explore its gilded baroque interior, and investigate the colonial relics in its museum.

Approach the cathedral from the front so you can best appreciate its impressive façade, which is elegant in white and marked a series of wide columns. Its twin spires, built in neoclassical style, are an instantly recognisable feature of the skyline in central Lima. The cathedral’s construction began in 1535, but it has been through many enlargements and renovations since then – not least to rebuild after a number of devastating earthquakes. Head through the optimistically named Portada del Perdón (Door of Forgiveness) and enter the body of the church.

The Cathedral of Lima has the dubious honour of being designed by Francisco Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador who is generally held responsible for the conquering of the Incas and the founding of the city of Lima. Stop by the cathedral’s museum for an insight into this city’s dark and intriguing colonial past.

Pizarro’s tomb is actually located in the cathedral. Seek out his resting place, which lies within a chapel that is ornately decorated with colourful mosaics. The cathedral is home to 14 side chapels, some of which open onto the street. Explore these at your leisure.

As you walk around inside the Cathedral of Lima, take note of the grandeur in its design. Look out for the gold-plated Grand Altar and the notable paintings on the walls. A number of old pictures were discovered only recently, during a renovation.

The Cathedral of Lima is located in central Lima, just south of the Rímac River. It is easily accessible by bus and close walking distance to a number of other attractions including the Palacio Municipal de Lima (Presidential Palace of Lima) and the Aliaga Virreynal House.
