Brighton Beach is made up of three stretches of beach along Port Phillip Bay: Upper Brighton Beach, Middle Brighton Beach and Dendy Street Beach. You can find the Middle Brighton Pier and historically notable sea baths on Middle Brighton Beach. Further along the bay at Dendy Street Beach, there are more than 80 celebrated huts or 'bathing boxes' and these are without doubt the star attraction in the area. The 'bathing boxes', made up of rough and basic materials, were built during the more modest times of the 19th-century as changing rooms for bathers. But they more than make up for their rough design with their riot of fabulous colours. The stunning, outlandish designs on the huts dominate the seafront, demanding to be photographed so don't forget your camera!Locals can buy a licence for a 'bathing box' on an annual basis but high demand makes these very difficult to obtain. Nevertheless, some of the lucky few who do manage to get one leave their boxes open at the weekend, allowing you to have a look in.All of the more traditional charms of the seaside are here too, with calm, safe waters patrolled by lifeguards, along with a green foreshore behind the beach for sports, picnics and a change from the sand. The area's walk and cycle paths allow you to follow the length of Port Phillip Bay, rewarding the active visitor with views to savour across the city and the bay. And if you’re planning a day at the beach then don't forget your sun cream, water, and a hat to guard against the hot Australian weather.Brighton Beach is only a half-hour drive from the heart of Melbourne, and pay parking is available nearby. There are also regular buses, and the Sandringham train follows the suburbs of Port Phillip Bay into the city centre.
