At the foot of beautiful Mount View in the famous Hunter Valley wine region lies a winery that, while relatively small, has, over its 40-year existence, created a reputation for itself as a producer of exceptionally high standards.Briar Ridge Wines has some of the most well-respected and passionate wine-makers in the country and this reputation, as well as fantastic on-site facilities, are attracting ever-increasing numbers of visitors to the picturesque estate. Most of the grapes used by Briar Ridge are grown locally in Hunter Valley but they also draw fruits from the elevated, fertile soils of Orange further inland, as well as the rich, limestone lands of the South-Australian coast.The knowledgeable staff at the cellar door will fill you in on everything you want to know about the wines on offer, which include the rare Karl Stockhausen Semillon, famous among wine-buffs for its citrus tones. There are also winery tours available for small groups and, after you’ve tasted a few free samples, head over to the Briar Grillade Café for a unique dining experience.This on-site eatery is open for brunch, lunch and afternoon tea and all of the outdoor tables are constructed from oak vats. Sit here and delight in the stunning views of the beautiful surrounding scenery as you enjoy a glass or two al fresco. All the menu items are matched with specific wines to enrich the flavours of the fresh, locally sourced cheeses, vegetables and meats.Briar Ridge Wines is located just minutes from Pokolbin in the heart of Hunter Valley. The most popular way to get there is by car but you can also take one of the Rover Coaches that passes through the village. There’s free parking at the winery which is open daily, as is the cellar door. The café is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
