This imposing sandstone edifice looks out over stunning views of Belfast and is one of the city's major free attractions.

For centuries, Belfast Castle has proudly stood as one of the city's most prominent landmarks. This attraction, positioned on the slopes of Cave Hill Country Park, welcomes history buffs, families and anyone eager to get photos of the finest views of Belfast. Stroll the castle's idyllic grounds, dine in its classy cellar restaurant or take a walk in Cave Hill Country Park.

Belfast has had a few castles in its time. The first, a Norman building, was replaced in the 17th century by a larger, stronger design. Unfortunately, this burnt down, which led the 3rd Marquess of Donegall to decide to erect the one you see now on Cave Hill, in 1862. Public access has been granted to the castle since 1934.

When walking in through the castle's main entrance, keep your eyes peeled for Donegall's coat-of-arms, with its motto “Invitum sequitur honor” (Reluctant to follow honour). Explore the permanent exhibits, before admiring local artwork, jewellery and collectibles at Castle Antiques, located in the cellar. Also in the bowels of the castle is the Cellar Restaurant pause here for a spot of lunch before heading back outside to walk it off in the castle's sweeping grounds.

For an entire afternoon of hiking, set off on one of Cave Hill County Park's trails. Exquisite views of Belfast can be seen from the castle and from various vantage points around the park. Return to the castle as the light fades it's beautifully illuminated every night. There's also a tavern situated in the cellar, where you can drink into the evening.

Belfast Castle is on Antrim Road, on the fringes of Belfast. It's roughly a 10-minute drive from the city centre. Entry and parking is free. You can also get to the castle by bus, although you'll need to walk for around 15 minutes from the stop. Belfast Castle is open every day. Due to weddings and conferences, access to the ground and first floors is sometimes restricted. Check ahead of your visit.
